I've probably seen that commercial twice as many times as any other.  Nickelodeon used to play it constantly, probably because Sears thought the kids would pester their parents for AC as their asses became stuck to the pleather couch in the summer heat.

They seem to be quite a happy couple on the surface, but is the interesting art direction indicative of some dark undertones?

Sears needs to make a sequel.  Maybe about washers and dryers for their sweaty clothes.

Another weird thing is that they're both more attractive in the first scene with their messy sweaty hair than in the last scene with their combed cool air hair. What's up with that!

Why not.  The first scene looks like they just finished up a passionate, sweaty session of hot lovemaking.  The second they are wearing Mom and Dad clothes, complete with the lame G-rated joke.  It's like a metaphor for the soul-crushing nature of the modern suburban marriage.  I knew there were dark undertones!
