I'm certain Gazprom would much rather get paid in yuan than rubles.  If the SHTF then the ruble is likely to fall considerably whereas the yuan should remain stable or even rise slightly in such a circumstance.

If I were Chinese, I would use it to sign some really nice long-term contracts in rubles Within 10 years they might be getting their oil and gaz for free
