Howard Dean For America - December 2nd-8th, 2007

"Social Security is one of the most successful programs in American history. It has provided a safety net for our elderly, who are in dear need of it. Yet, some have said that the program will go insolvent and, panicing, want to tear down benefits for our seniors. That's downright wrong. Some even say that we should put their retirement on the whims of Wall Street! That's downright wrong too! The numbers do say we need to make some changes, and that's why, instead of reducing benefits for seniors, I plan to raise the wage cap on social security so that more money comes in and we save the program for years to come. We should pay our bills, and I am the most fiscally responsible person running for President because of my record on that, but we should not pay our bills on the back of seniors, who have worked hard for so many years. Let's give our seniors a break!"

Excerpts: Dean Interview on Maddow

Maddow: To talk about his campaign, here is Presidential candidate Howard Dean. Now, Governor Dean, you are currently running a bit behind Evan Bayh and Blanche Lincoln in a lot of key states. Where do you think you go from here, and can you beat them?

Howard Dean: Thanks for having me on Rachel, and I think the answer here is yes. Democratic voters are tired of standing in line waiting for things to get done, President Bush and Giuliani haven't done a thing for the middle class, and most of their policies have been backed not just with Republican votes, but with Democrats as well. Some of them were to blame for 9/11, like the Patriot Act, but two of the most egregious supporters of Bush-Giuliani were Lincoln and Bayh. Bayh has been more honest about, saying he supports the Mitt Romney mandates plan and being in favor of the Patriot Act, but Blanche Lincoln may have the most egregious vote of all, in favor of that nasty Medicare Part D which puts more in the pocket of corporations and does very little for real healthcare reform, and voting in favor of No Child Left Behind. Look, I'm not a purest, but I think America needs more than just talk, we need action. I'm someone who has taken action as Governor, and I plan to do so in the White House.

Maddow: You recently came back from a big foreign trip, and afterwards, unveiled a plan for U.S. foreign policy revolving around peace. Can you elaborate here, for our viewers, what you have in mind.

Dean: Sure. I have accepted the fact that the U.S. is a big country that can help. But we have too much going on - a military budget that is bloated beyond belief, military contractors who sell us weapons we don't need, bases across the world in countries like Germany, and an active foreign policy has created more harm than good. Look back in the last fifty years, and we've done nothing right in the middle east. It's time to hunt down and capture Osama Bin Laden, shut down terror in the region and then get out. Get out of Iraq already. My plan? reduce military spending back to pre-9/11 levels + inflation, reduce our bases across the world, organize a system where we only get the weapons we need, reform the Pentagon, and embrace a foreign policy of diplomacy, friendship, and defense. National Defense should be national defense, not offense.

Maddow: You've promoted yourself as a candidate who can balance the budget. A lot of your priorities appear to conflict with that idea, can you explain how you'll do so.

Dean: Well actually, all of my plans are cost effective. My budget will reduce health care costs by making Medicare for All, giving Americans universal health coverage, raise taxes on top earners to the Clinton rates, cut military spending down to pre-9/11 levels plus inflation, cutting waste and extra bureaucracy, and eliminating oil subsidies. Governors have to balance budgets all the time, Washington insiders have never had the ability to, and as President, I will force a balanced budget through the congress.

Maddow: Senator Blanche Lincoln has repeated one thing throughout her campaign - that she is not using this to look for a job. A lot of pundits, me included, think this is a pointed attack on you. How do you respond to that accusation, that you are looking to be a pundit yourself?

Dean: Punditry is not something I am equipped for honestly, I'm not blindly partisan. If Democrats do something wrong, I'll say it. I'm a liberal, but I'm independently thinking. The fact that Blanche Lincoln is trying to point to me and say, that's a guy who's just looking for exposure, my campaign is substantive, informative, while she's touting a record she doesn't even have, and touting herself as unavoidable frontrunner even when she trails Evan Bayh or Myself in most polls. It's a flawed strategy and I don't think it's going to work.

Maddow: Howard Dean everyone, a man who won't mince words.

Dean: Always good to be on Rachel.

"Leadership needs someone who is willing to take the bull by the horns and take control, not a follower. Only one candidate for President has consistently led on the issues, fought for the working class, and put everyone in his state first. Now, if you give me the chance, I'll put everyone in this nation first. I don't take special interest money, I don't believe that's the right thing to do. So many politicians, aren't bad people, but they are beholden to special interests because of how much money they owe them for years of campaigning. I will be free to fight for the people of this country that make it great, not the corporate donors."

Howard Dean TV Ad: Al Gore

"Hi, I'm Al Gore, and you've probably seen the ads, met the candidates, and are already sick of the empty promises. America doesn't need any more of that. What America needs more of is bold, compassionate leadership, that will help those struggling to make it and save the environment for generations to come. Only one candidate can do that honestly, and that's Howard Dean. He's not someone who hides from his record, he stands with it. He's not someone who votes against his constituents interests, he fights for them. And finally if its the right thing to do, he'll do it, no matter what the consequences are. I am honored to endorse Howard Dean for President, and I hope you see in him everything I do."

Dean - "I'm Howard Dean, and I approve this message."

Howard Dean TV Ad: Booming

Howard Dean: "Our campaign has grown, not because of the regular Washington tit for tat, but because of you, the American people. We proved you can have a campaign without lobbyists, special interests, and corporate greed, and once we get into Washington, we will change that. America deserves to be run by the American people! That's the type of policy I'm talking about!"

It's a lot tougher to talk child safety when you've been under the protection of the Secret Service since 1991, but they can't be everywhere, and as I'm sure Patty and Beth have told you, that is where we as parents need to stand vigilant, whether we have government bodyguards, hire a security firm, or just lock all your doors, because in today's internet age your children could be talking to quite literally anyone. This is especially dangerous for "special needs" individuals, like those our honoree has helped over his years here in Orange County, as their more limited capacity to understand what is going on around them can put them in more danger. William Steiner understands this, and with his establishment of group homes across Orange County, we salute him.

Round 7: December 9-15, 2007

Less than a month before the Iowa Caucuses and New Hampshire Primary and the candidates are continuing to make their case. Hillary Clinton is trying to reassert herself as a major candidate in the race, with trips to Iowa and New Hampshire. Clinton also attended a Pearl Harbor Memorial in Hawaii.

This week Al Gore went up on the air with an ad supporting Howard Dean. Gore's endorsement is big boost to the Dean campaign as he look to rally support in Iowa, which is seen to be an important state for Dean in terms of testing his viability as a candidate. Currently, Dean is in a three-way race with Blanche Lincoln and Evan Bayh. Both Bayh and Lincoln are playing strong for the state and with an upcoming debate taking place it will be an opportunity for each of the candidates to distinguish themselves.

John Kerry is still a factor in the race, spending his campaign resources and time in New Hampshire, but recent polls have shown him slip, with Bayh, Dean and Clinton gaining and gaining strong. The debate will be an opportunity for Kerry to reemerge.

Polls on the Democratic side show Bayh and Dean still locked for first, with Clinton and Lincoln battling out for second. Kerry polls up the rear. Most pundits believe the results of the Iowa Caucuses will shape the rest o the primary process going forward. "The winner will instantly become the front runner, and who finishes second and third will be in the top tier." -- Chris Matthews.

On the Republican side President Giuliani is holding strong, though polls continue to show a tightening in South Carolina, but Mark Sanford still has some ground to make up in Iowa, where he needs to make a strong showing to be considered a viable challenger to Giuliani.

Senator Kerry: Why should Democrats nominate you instead your opponents?

Governor Dean: If you become President, and you are dealing with a divided Congress, how do you bring both sides together?

Senator Bayh: The question over the federal government's role in Education continues to come up. Is this an area where more government is needed or less?

Evan Bayh's Speech
December 9, 2007
Looking at the polls, only a few numbers and we can take down the president. It shows that, no matter what wing do you belong at the Democratic Party or the Republican, experience, integrity and issues should dominate your candidacy. And that's what our campaign is focusing. We can no longer stand the eight-year Republican dominance in Washington, we should be strong at all times to see a brighter, better and a stronger America.

Speech at Younts Stadium, Tigerville, South Carolina

I know many of you want to vote for your home state's Governor, but for the Democrats in the crowd, please give Hillary your support. She's the only candidate who has had a consistent position on Health Care, on Iraq, and on Social Issues than Senator Lincoln, Governor Dean or Senator Bayh. She's the only candidate who knows what it's like to be in the Microscope of the White House, and she's the only candidate who has the courage, willpower, and political will to take down President Giuliani.
