Why in the Wide, Wide World Of Sports is there no Democrat running for Senate in Alabama?

Is there a Green candidate? If not, who are progressives supposed to vote for?

The fact that there's only one candidate sounds like something straight out of the Soviet Union.

From wiki; "He was the only candidate to file before the deadline and as such he will be unopposed in the primary and general elections.[1] An independent candidate would have been able to challenge Sessions if at least 44,828 signatures had been submitted by June 3, 2014.[2]"

Sounds like Soviet-style communism to me.

A Democrat would have a tough time in lots of places all over America, but people still need a choice.

Otherwise, it's not democracy.

Somebody in some other thread was complaining that they didn't run "Someguy McBluedog" which is hilarious, but true.

I guess Alabama progressives (who haven't fled yet) would have to write in something stupid.

If I lived in Alabama, I might just vote for myself as a write-in. I always do this in uncontested local elections.

...Because no one filed to run.

It's not as if Sessions and the Alabama Republican Party are oppressing progressives and preventing them from running a candidate.

The fact that no one ran does not imply that Alabama is broken or hates freedom, it implies that nobody wanted to be demolished by Jeff Sessions and waste time and money while doing so.

Will Sessions automatically receive 100% of the votes, or will abstentions and write-ins also count?

See Thune, South Dakota in 2010.
