I find it bizarre in a way. It's for an Ingress thing but there are some other plans. I expect it to be a blast. Now the thing is Des Moines is better than most places all things considered...but regardless I live in Minneapolis! Why on Earth would anyone want to leave Minneapolis for Des Moines? That's like someone from NYC or San Francisco being stoked about coming to Minneapolis.

Yeah weird, I can't shake that feeling. Anyone else had something like this?

Not at all.  Iowa's cities seem to be a bit unique.  I'd be pretty excited to see Des Moines.

pretty fucking weird.

I lived in Iowa for five years, and I don't ever recall getting a hard-on to visit Des Moines.  As a matter of fact, no one I knew got a hard on about visiting Des Moines.

Of course, Bill Bryson, who was born and raised in Des Moines and who wrote many very humorous travel books about the US, Australia, the UK, and all manner of Anglophone destinations, only had this to say about Des Moines:  "Des Moines is a place of death.  People go there to die."

Going to a new place is fun, and not just going to big cities. There are plenty of new experiences to be had in smaller places too. I can't say that I know much of anything about Des Moines, but there must be something interesting and unique about it.

I mistakenly thought that Des Moines was along the Miss.  The fact that it is in the middle of the state lowers my expectations a little bit.

However, I'd LOVE to visit Davenport!

The next newbie who goes "Y are Eye-wuh such Democrat?"... we should just post that picture and remind them more than half of Iowa's population lives in a place like that.
