So, your views on Charles Haughey? Personally I'd say HP, albeit a somewhat disturbingly hilarious one. Plus, of course, he was the inspiration for one of the best campaign songs ever. I mean, I'm not an Irishman, and if I was it would've be highly unlikely that I'd have been a Fianna Fail supporter, and yet, on the basis of this song alone, I'd have voted for him.

Objectively scum, but in an entertaining way. The interesting thing is that he was politically a failure in many ways - not winning a majority was unheard of for a Fianna Fáil Taoiseach - but a very tenacious one. The cult of personality he built up is also fascinating.

In terms of sheer guile and ruthlessness Haughey was, of course, the best there ever was, and most likely the best there ever will be. He made Nixon look like an amateur. If Haughey had been President and was forced to resign over Watergate in 1974 he'd be President again by 1980.
