This will be my last poll in the series. Truman won, Dewey was in 4th place... but it was never determined if Eisenhower or McGovern were in second place. So let's see who takes the silver and bronze for the post-FDR presidential nominees of major parties!

Tough one -- because we know the record of Eisenhower, and we have no idea what sort of President McGovern would have been.

McGovern. Best presidential candidate of the 20th century.

Yes, he was such a good Presidential candidate that he didn't even bother looking closely enough into the background of his running mate, Senator Thomas Eagleton, who he had to drop from the ticket even before the campaign was really under way.

That Eagleton had received an esoteric treatment for depression is not a valid reason to disqualify him from a ticket. McGovern shouldn't have dropped him (which hurt a lot more than it helped), however that does not diminish from the greatness of what McGovern stood for.

The same Eisenhower who was sympathetic to segregationists and refused to take a stand against McCarthyism even after Joe McCarthy started trying to paint George Marshall as an unpatriotic Soviet sympathizer?  Yeah, that guy sure was a real leader Roll Eyes  Eisenhower was a great *military* leader/General.  However, he was a pretty mediocre *political* leader.

It is funny, because you could have just as well been talking about JFK there.

Nice try, but although it is true that both John and Robert Kennedy were awful on McCarthyism, the idea that either was sympathetic to segregationists is simply absurd.  Thanks for playing though, better luck next time!
