She once said "your either a feminist or you're a bigot", and tying her to the loony ones could hurt her with social conservatives, men, and older women.

EDIT: I confused a quote that Gloria Allred said with what I originally claimed Clinton said, my apologies. My main point is that Hillary identifying as a feminist may be baggage due to it being a buzz word among many Americans.

I don't think social conservatives would be voting for her anyway...

I've never heard that quote from her. If true, I've lost a bit of respect.

If you're going to make up quotes and misattribute them, at least use at least some proper grammar.

To be fair, I'm almost certain she made that statement before Tumblr Feminists became a thing.

Well, she's right. If you don't believe that women should be equal then you're a bigot. What's the big deal? The point of the Democratic party is that we don't bend over backwards to get the bigots to support us.

Not in the least. It depends upon one's definition of "feminist". The norm is acceptance of women entering roles that used to be for men only.

Bigots are usually insecure about themselves.

I agree, but she still identifies as a feminist and it's a buzz word for a lot of Americans http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/16/feminism-poll_n_3094917.html.

I think people who hate feminists probably wouldn't be voting for her anyway; and it might help her given the recent resurgence of feminism (on tumblr, yes, but it's beginning to seep into mainstream discourse too).

Although many don't realize it, most Americans (virtually all Democrats and a whole lot of Republicans) are feminists.

Probably not.

It helps her in the primary, helping her be an icon to a lot of young activists.

It would only be an issue if she says stupid things that alienate some voters (IE- If she says that anyone who isn't a feminist is a bigot.) But that goes against the Clinton strengths at triangulation.

Sorry for confusing the two.

The problem with Clinton being a feminist is that it reinforces the image of her being a "rich elitist liberal", which would hurt her everywhere except the coasts. You're forgetting how much of politics is likability and perception rather than the reality of the situation. If the right candidate comes along who is likeable then the tables could be turned back to Bush-Kerry when people voted for him because he was "the guy ya could have a beer with". People might just perceive her as someone who caters to the radical feminists even if Clinton is smart in responding to these attacks because of their own insecureties. Of course the Republicans will probably just nominate a nutjob like Cruz or spew nonsense about birth-control and nothing I just said will matter.

If my party nominates Cruz I will not be voting Republican and will hold my nose, probably shed a few tears, and vote Hilary.

Most people who are so anti-feminist that a quote like this makes a difference to them probably aren't going to vote for Hillary anyway.

That will make a huge difference in Massachusetts.

Um...she'll rely on some social conservative votes. I realize it isn't the vote that it used to be (Dem +social conservative), but losing key social conservative/fiscal liberals in places like Iowa and Wisconsin and Ohio and Pennsylvania and Florida can make the difference in those states.
