SF Gate quotes Dems close to her saying she's not running. Free-for-all primary?

If true, I hope Gavin Newsom runs.

If this is true, then is Kamala Harris the favorite?

It would be hilarious if the Dem field were so packed that they made the same mistake they've been making with congressional races - running too many Dems, so Republicans get both of the top spots.

Not likely, but hoping for lolz beyond hope.

That could be an option, too.

They have some odd mentions for possibilities - Janet Napolitano? Tom Steyer? While the Dem bench is fairly deep, Republicans are thinking about running Carly Fiorina again. I mean, well see. This could be an entertaining race.

I think Harris and Newsom are highly likely to become senator and governor, but no one knows which office they each will take. Personally I hope Newsom gets in the senate and Harris runs for governor.

After the mess of the controller primary this year, I think the party is going to be smart enough to organize their candidates better. CA Dems are organized well enough to pull that off.

Aww, I was hoping Boxer would run again. She deserved to be senior senator for at least a few years.

Ugh, I'm not a fan of Newsom, but I guess he'd do less damage as senator than governor.

If Boxer retires, then Democrats would want Kamala Harris or Tom Steyer, the businessman. Republicans would want Devin Nunes, Darrell Issa, and not Tim Donnelly, the former minuteman that lost the California governor's primary to Neel Kashkari in 2014.

Republicans have no chance in California no matter who they nominate (especially in a presidential year) but I'd love to see Darrell Issa run so he'd no longer be in the House.

I'd love to see a Democrat clown-car primary allowing two Republicans to proceed to the GE because of California's Top Two law. However, I'm certain the DNC would do everything in its power to clear the field for Kamala Harris.

Eh, it's no guarantee that Feinstein will retire in 2018

He's ambitious, and definitely will try for higher office. And Harris would blow Newsom away as a governor. I'm hoping for Newsom in the senate just because I want to clear the path for Harris to be governor.

I'd rather keep Newsom away from both offices. I'd like Kamala Harris in whichever she prefers and Hilda Solis in the other.

What makes people think the top-two system will still be around in 2016?

It would probably need to repealed by Proposition, and the next election that Propositions can qualify for is the 2016 election, so it wouldn't have an impact until 2018.

No consideration for Antonio Villagarosa,(former?) mayor of LA...or Ed Lee, Mayor of San Francisco?

Both of them I imagine would do well in the Senate.

Harris I'd want to either be governor or become the Vice Presidential running mate.

Dang it, I was hoping Boxer would stay on for another term, seeing as she's only 73.

I'd be more inclined to think that in 2018 at age 86, Dianne Feinstein would be more likely to retire.
