Option 2, definitely.

Gay men have historically been on the cutting-edge of the homosexual rights movement in the United States, and they should be recognized as such by having their letter come first in this increasingly-commonly used acronym.

It is much, much easier to say it this way, but the simple term "gay" is what I use.

But...it doesn't mean just gay.

When I come across a bisexual person in the news or in my personal life, I'd say they are bisexual. But I don't use the term "LBGT" in conversation because most people don't know or don't care about the term. If a man marries a man, or a woman marries a woman, it is a gay wedding. It is a simple phrase that no longer carries a negative connotation, no need for such severe political correctness (seeing as it is perfectly correct to use the term "gay" in most circumstances).

Again, when transgendered people come up in conversation, I refer to them as how they wish to be addressed. Just because someone is not straight doesn’t mean they must be relegated to acronym. People are individuals, and I refer to them (and their sexual orientation) as such.

As to the OP, gay men have historically congratulated themselves by thinking so.

This.

And it is simply easier to say with the L first. Its a pretty artificial sounding acronym anyway (no wovels), so there is no reason to make it any harder.

LEGABITs would  be eaqsier to say, but it sounds weird.

Ideally it would be HBT (Homosexual, Bisexual, Transsexual) or HBTQ (+Queer) There really no point in differentiation of male and female homosexuals. However if it must be gender-specific obviously LGBT is preferable.

HBT sounds like it's a hormone.

I really don't see any reason to use the term, I mean how many normal people (including gay, bisexual and transsexual normal people) use the term in their daily life. It seem an incredible artificial identity marker, made solely to be used as a tool in a immature political and sociological debate. Leave the term to college social justice warriors and let us other just move on.

LGBTQIA. Tongue

Of the choices, obviously LGBT. There's no particular reason why it should be in that order, but it does flow better when reading or pronouncing it. It's basically like saying "mom and dad" over "dad and mom" or saying "black and white" over "white and black" (the latter sounds odd in each instance). I think it comes down to what sounds better and LGBT just sounds better over all the alternatives.

Elgeebeetee

vs

gee-elbeetee

What rolls off the tongue easier? It's fairly obvious.

______

Obviously a better acronym would be one that encompasses all non-conforming sexualities and identities.

GLBT is pretty dumb.

Personall GSM makes the most sense, but realistically LGBT+various other identities is ok.
