http://bigstory.ap.org/article/obama-outlining-mission-fight-islamic-militants

"WASHINGTON (AP) — In a major reversal, President Barack Obama is moving to deepen the U.S. military role in the volatile Middle East, including training and arming Syrian rebels to fight Islamic State militants and potentially expanding airstrikes across the Iraqi border into Syria.

Obama was to outline his plans for battling the Islamic State group in a high-stakes address to the nation Wednesday night. Ahead of his remarks, congressional leaders grappled with whether to support his request to arm the Syrian opposition and if so, how to get such a measure through the fractured legislature.

Obama's plans amount to a striking shift for a president who has steadfastly sought to wind down American military campaigns in the Middle East and avoid new wars. That stance has been notable in Syria, where Islamic State militants have taken advantage of the instability created by a three-year civil war and now operate freely in areas near and across the Iraqi border."

Good, good. Let's just hope it's not too little, too late.

It would also be helpful if he could time victory in this conflict for late October.

What are the odds that Obama will put significant boots on the ground?

But I thought it was a fantasy for some farmer yokels to suddenly rise up and be able to fight?

I was hoping for an informative speech. Actually I was expecting it since I heard he'd be laying out a strategy.  Nope.

I really wish he'd sit down with a map and detail who our allies are in the region, how we are going to help them, and what the endgame is.

If Clinton had her way, we wouldn't be dealing with these problems. Obama was a goddamn fool for not listening to her.

That would be luck.

ISIS is not the sort of people who seek or get a negotiated peace. Neither is it likely to surrender.

I never thought I'd say this, but I agree with Sarah Palin's earlier statement that we should "Let Allah sort it out."

You can tell Obama is a basketball player, he pivots like a mad man.  I wonder how he does on the pick and roll.

I really liked how the President made clear, as did George Bush thirteen years ago, that this is evil we are fighting and not Islam.

Remember, during the Great War, the American Government's depiction of the Japanese was that of cockroaches. Subhuman. Garbage. President Obama's statement of "eradicating this cancer" was some of the best foreign policy rhetoric I've heard in years.

I also liked his bluntness about his willingness to hunt terrorists down and "destroy them" even in countries that we are not presently involved in conflicts with.

Thought that Japan was an ally during the Great War.

That's the most worrying part.   Preventing ISIS from taking over the region and from committing genocide - that's one thing. It's going to be very, very difficult but at least it might hopefully be doable. But the idea that we are going to completely destroy every terrorist without creating a whole lot of new ones in the process is madness.  Anyone who thinks the US should be doing a bunch of fly-by hit and runs in the role of world police needs to take another look at Ferguson.

He's good at flopping, too.

At least he's not too proud to contradict his ill-conceived withdrawal strategy.

same here, I was actually expecting too much.

I think the strategy in Iraq is good. The regular army and US airstrikes will eventually manage to drive ISIS out the country.
But in Syria I don't think there is really anything to do, it's too much of a mess, and most of the "moderates" rebels are also islamists who just happen to be a bit less crazy than ISIS. It makes me cringe to hear that the "moderates" rebels will be trained in Saudi Arabia, because when they mean moderates, they actually mean that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_Front_(Syria)

It's OK, we need to train our next enemies to defeat.
