Chertoff promises changes to illegal aliens policy
Homeland security secretary says all illegal aliens will be returned

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff promised Tuesday to end the "catch and release" policy that has allowed tens of thousands of non-Mexican illegal aliens to disappear within the United States.

"Return every single illegal entrant -- no exceptions," Chertoff said in prepared testimony to a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on proposals to overhaul the immigration system.

Chertoff was joined by Labor Secretary Elaine Chao in presenting administration views on the illegal immigrant problem. He said President Bush remains committed to a comprehensive approach including gaining control of the border, enforcing workplace laws and establishing a temporary worker program.

But least they are starting to do something.

Errecting a fence is not practical, since no matter how tall, thick, or wide you make it, it can always be crossed (note the Berlin Wall for example).  Additionally, it would take years to put one up.  It's better to just use those funds to increase the personnel on the border in addition to motion detectors.  Quicker response, and more likely to snag them before having them disappear into the crowds.

Hah, the nations lawns will go untendend!

What a stupid move - waste resources molesting gardeners and other serfs instead of focusing on the Islamic types (if there even are any).

Well, I think it means something when the rhetoric and language of the debate changes. Once the policy becomes widely agreed upon, at least in leadership circles and the general public, then it's enforcement is probably a matter of time.

Failing to accomplish these more agressive goals would then be seen as failure, rather than merely a difference in policy.

In other words, a good first step and an encouraging sign, but the policy must be carried through to its completion.
