Breaking news over the wires is that Ian Paisley has passed away

There's a lot that can be said about this man, who was for about 50 years one of the important political figures on the island of Ireland, not of a part of this record is without.... controversy. Dominant figure in Loyalism and Ulster Presbyterianism he will leave a big hole in both with his absence.

The polite thing for me to do is say nothing at all.

RIP. I've got a mixed opinion of him, and (had I been Northern Irish) wouldn't have been a supporter of his, but still, rest in peace.

His obituaries will make for amusing reading: NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO... First Minister?... YES

It definitely seems to be "famous people dying" month.

Never really liked him myself, but at least he got it right in the end.

Well, neither his brand of Protestantism nor his hardline Unionism were exactly my cup of tea.  But my opinion of him (and Martin McGuinness too) improved markedly during the "Chuckle Brothers" period: sometimes former hardliners working together like that is exactly what's needed.

I can't believe he has died. He was one of those people who were just always there. He made his presence known, regardless what you think of him.

Well at least now Ulster is safe from the crime against nature.

Arguably, that last bit was predictable in hindsight from the early 1970s (he came out with some quite surprisingly "liberal" stuff in private discussions while under the influence of Desmond Boal). But until such time as he became unchallenged top dog of Unionism, we were treated to thirty years of destructiveness as every sell-out and Lundy in the UUP was denounced from the pulpit. Even Her Maj got the rough side of his tongue after her support for the Good Friday Agreement - a "parrot" if I remember correctly.

And in the end, the followers who'd been nurtured on forty years of rejectionism became discommoded and disoriented by the Chuckle Brothers act and proceeded to dump him.

A towering, larger than life figure who was responsible, directly or indirectly, for bloodshed. However, he was vital in finally coming over to the peace process. RIP.

I counter with this anti-Paisley protest song.

I can say that my nationalist friends from Ballymena always had a begrudging respect for Paisley as a very hardworking constituency MP.

I have no opinion on the person, but it's always good to turn this kind of page.

Yep. Quite a reverse of "Molotov syndrome" (AKA: "whaaa, you mean he wasn't dead years ago?")

Especially since he seemed like someone who had sold his soul to the Devil for eternal life.
