A hypothetical scenario here. Presume for a moment that in your home state, there developed over the course of the next few decades a movement calling for the independence of your home state. The movement is ideologically diverse, but the mainstream of the movement can be said to share your overall political ideology, and is promising that, if granted independence, it would enact measures that coincide with what you believe to be the right policies and/or positions and that would not be able to be enacted otherwise, at least in the short term.

And let's assume that the movement is strong enough to force the United States government to have to consider the possibility of removing one star from the flag. If that were the case, would you back independence for your state, given the above criteria? Or would you oppose it? If you'd support it, why? If you would oppose it, why?

Tough one. It'd be economically disastrous since we rely on subsidies from Ottawa. That said, there's some policies I'd really like to see implemented.

No, I identify as Australian not Victorian. And, without the support of the federal government, Victoria and all Australian states would be in the sh**t. Australia thrives because all states uphold the others when they struggle, Victoria did it in the early 2000s for other states and now WA is baring the load.

Yes. The economy would be worse for wear at some point due to the loss of federal support to maintain infrastructure but it'd be worthwhile to scrap 150 nuclear weapons and establish a socialist republic in a (relatively) affluent, post-industrial setting. There really isn't even the slightest chance this would ever happen though in a place like contemporary Montana.

Not American, but the idea of Berlin seceding from Germany is hilarious. (Well, we could move the capital back to Bonn and build a wall around Berlin this time. Tongue )

1. Tennessee receives far more money in federal benefits than we pay in taxes.
2. I'm not a traitor.
3. The last time we left the Union, things didn't go so well for us.

That already happened here... well, without the referendum bit. They were more into armed struggle in those days.

I have no idea what my position would have been back then. Probably against.

Probably not-California needs the rest of the country to function properly plus I consider myself far more of an American than a Californian.

No, would defeat purpose of United States of America. Wisconsin would not be able to have a strong enough economy to survive as its own nation. I would rather reform the system bottom-up (local to national)

Yes, of course. (Social Democratic People's Republic of) Texas Forever.

lol, that'll happen.  Also, Texas delenda est.

Anyway, of course not (D).  Though I would not necessarily be opposed to efforts by cities and close-in-metro areas to redraw state and regional boundaries to better reflect reality.  States are largely artificial anachronisms (with the obvious exceptions of Alaska and Hawaii, where the geography of distance forces their relevance) and should cede most of their powers either up or down, depending on the situation.

Not really. I don't trust the California ballot initiative process as it is, but I certainly wouldn't trust it when it's free of the constraints of the US Constitution.
