I wonder if Mr. Illini would agree that Texas's conservative voters should be able to leave the Union due to their oppression by yellow-belly Yankee commies.

I'm expecting a close vote, but I fall pretty decidedly on the No side.

You damn know it. Anyone identifying this as simply nationalistic (calling it that doesn't mean much without the context) is missing the strong political reasons for doing this, mainly that Scotland has been under the grip of conservative England while its citizens are significantly more socialist. Scotland ought to be able to chart its own path on these issues.

The most unfortunate part about this is the boost that it will give to the Tories.

And when is Manchester going to get their independence vote?

They ought to be able to leave so long as they do so legally. The Confederacy's secession was clearly different if you are trying to allude to that.

For the record, I would enthusiastically welcome a Texas secession. Wink

Breaking up the cancerous Empire is bad now?

The Empire broke up decades before either you or I were born. While it existed nowhere did it find as much support as in Scotland. Whatever this is about, it's not that.
of course that doesn't stop people from repeating it for some bizarre reason

you might as well just go ahead and rip off the entire band-aid and give Wales independence and give Northern Ireland back to Ireland. Put the "United" Kingdom out of it's misery.

Exactly my position (or, hell, even having a totally independent Northern Ireland but ideally, Ireland would be united again) but Wales would never want to be independent.

Any decision on Northern Ireland must be made in the context and in alignment with the Good Friday Agreement. Scotland should not factor into this equation at all.  Too much blood was spilled and too much work went into building a peace for it to be cavalierly set aside.

How do you propose they go about doing that?

Wow, interesting poll results.  I wonder how close to reality it ends up being.

For once, the (unfortunate) result here might mirror the actual vote.

I favor it as an outsider. I don't really have a clue as to how I would vote if I lived there.

A hell of a lot closer than most Atlas polls for any given election would be though.
