I understand speculating on a Clinton candidacy, that's fine. But why is she being treated like this messianic, invincible goddess? Is it because she is a woman? Clinton-era nostalgia? The fact that the Democrats know she is their only shot at keeping the White House?

Not the only shot by any means, but definitely our best shot.

To add to this, Hillary has always been popular within the Democratic Party. She had her detractors back in 2008 and was fairly polarizing, but overall, the majority of the party liked both her and Obama and wished they could nominate them both. However, Hillary being a loyal soldier and a good SoS pretty much erased what doubt some Democrats had about her. She kept nearly all her previous supporters (of course), but also added many Obamaites who see her more favorably now that the scars of 2008 have healed. Of course, she's not universally liked, but pretty much as close as you can get. She routinely polls in the ~90% favorability range with Democrats and attracts ~60-65% support in hypothetical primary polls, which are the kind of numbers incumbent presidents typically receive. She has so much hype because she's the overwhelming choice of the party (and the current favorite in the general election). Compare to the GOP, where support tends to be evenly split between 10+ different candidates, so obviously there isn't going to be anywhere near as much hype for any single one of them.

Certainly some of her supporters are calling those who dare criticize her sexist. Of course these same supporters probably supported Cuomo over Teachout.

No, her supporters call people who hold her to different standards than men as sexist, because they are. The biggest culprits being the DC pundit boys' club bubble.

Obama is perceived as a 'weak' President, alternatively, Hillary comes across strong and powerful which is something the Democrats are looking for.

Thank you.

But the same folks who voted for Obama because he was perceived to be a "dove" on foreign policy (some of whom are on here) want to crucify her because of one vote she took 12 years ago that they seem to think will matter when the primary campaign season rolls around. They seem to forget all about Obama's drones and continuing conflict in the Middle East (don't get me wrong, I support the move on ISIS), but the hypocrisy is alarming. They turn a blind eye for anything militarily that Obama does (all because of a speech he gave over a decade ago), but if this were Hillary, they'd be calling for her impeachment. I don't understand their way of thinking, or lack, thereof.

Oh yes, this is definitely true as well, and something I forgot to mention.

I think Obama has been decent overall, but there's one area where I'm sure even his most ardent supporters (and detractors, for that matter) can agree where he's been absolutely abysmal: dealing with Congress. He's been far too passive, detached, aloof, and tends to delegate everything to Reid (or sometimes Biden). I think that Hillary will be more likely to put her nose to the grindstone, do some backroom deals, grease the wheels, crack some skulls, etc. in order to get things done.

Clinton's supporters are the ones holding her to a different standard.  No one else would be able to get away with being a warmonger and have this much support.

To answer the opening question, there is hype because Madam President will give her opponents such a good thrashing that they will come back again and again begging for more punishment.

Lol. Dubya once had a 90% approval rating and was consistently praised by the media as "strong" and "decisive".

In an alternative universe, this forum is waxing ecstatic about Barack Obama 2016's campaign, because obviously the Democrats made a mistake in the 2008 primaries etc etc.

People like what could have been.

That's how people react right after a terrorist attack, people quickly figured out that his foreign policy sucked.
