I LOVE climatology Smiley The Köppen climate classification system is one of the most used methods for classifying your climate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification

The main grouping is this:

Group A: Tropical/megathermal climates
Group B: Dry (arid and semiarid) climates
Group C: Temperate/mesothermal climates
Group D: Continental/microthermal climates
Group E: Polar and alpine climates

Within these groups, there are subgroups:

Class A

    Tropical rainforest (Af)
    Tropical monsoon (Am)
    Tropical savanna (Aw, As)

Class B

    Desert (BWh, BWk)
    Semi-arid (BSh, BSk)

Class C

    Humid subtropical (Cfa, Cwa)
    Oceanic (Cfb, Cwb, Cfc, Cwc)
    Mediterranean (Csa, Csb)

Class D

Humid continental (Dfa, Dwa, Dfb, Dwb, Dsa, Dsb)
Subarctic (Dfc, Dwc, Dfd, Dwd, Dsc, Dsd)

Class E

    Polar (ET, EF)
    Alpine (ET/H)

Now within these subgroups are additional ones such as (Dfc). But lets keep it simple and just see the 12 main subgroups. I'd like to see the climate classification of where you live. Usually if you enter in your town or city in Wikipedia, it should be listed under climate.

For example, I live in Los Angeles and my climate type is Csa, which means my climate type is Mediterranean.

Subtropical. It sucks. I always thought the distinction between subtropical and continental was artificial and unnecessary though. They're pretty much the same except that continental is a bit colder. We both have four clearly defined seasons. We are both removed from the stabilizing influence of water. We both experience high humidity and get plenty of rain. We both lack defined wet and dry seasons. We're both subject to severe storms with rapid changes in temperature. We lack the micro climates associated with mountains that one sees on the West Coast.  It's pretty much the same damn thing plus or minus about 10 degrees.

Humid continental with an emphasis on the continental.  Cold winters, warm summers (as opposed to hot)

Light blue humid continental. Beautiful summers usually (flowers, green, etc.), horrid winters almost always with everything dead and a ripping, blasting wind (particularly December - mid March). Five blankets on the bed and the heater running. Skin chaps. Of course I hate cold. My ideal climate is that bit of red or orange, but green would suffice. I've always procrastinated, but in the next 4-5 years I'm going to have to see if my services can transfer to green, red, or orange because the older I get the worse this climate's going to be. According to Wikipedia, NYC is actually the northernmost outpost of humid subtropical.  I feel like we get (or at least used to get) enough snow to be continental, and I grew up thinking we were continental, but guess not.  Learn something new every day.

This is easily resolved by hypothesizing that we used to be continental, will be subtropical by the time I'm dead, and are in the midst of transitioning right now.  (Cue Bacon King.)

Humid subtropical at school, Mediterranean at home. One of those things is much more pleasant than the other.

Alpine
Cold winters, cooler summers, quite dry due to being located in an inner-alpine dry valley, very windy
Practically humid continental, I'd say, but a bit more temperate I guess due to the Atlantic and the Medditeranian, and - 5 Celsius average temperature.

Humid subtropical. I hate how hot this place is. I also wish it was windier, but that might just be due to the fact that I'm in a valley.

Has anyone every stopped to consider that there is probably a strong bias toward European climate types under the Koppen system?
