Well, a depressing night, but not without signs of hope. Scotland's day will come.

Given that it was a fair vote with massive turnout, what exactly is your problem with Scotland staying in the UK if that's the wish of most of its people?

Scotland's day came today, and the people voted to stay as part of the UK.

No: 54.28
Yes: 45.72

Edinburgh and Fife still out, so this should narrow some more.

Those two will widen it.
Edinburgh is Safe yes.....

What gave you that idea?
A while back, someone (not me) said a big margin in Edinburgh could change things:

And that, folks, is democracy at work.

so which Ayrshire is your favorite everyone? I think the best is East Ayrshire because of the trippy background image plus the official vote announcer being awesome and giving the audience a penalty for excessive celebration

All Ayrshires are equal. They're all in it together when it comes to the horrible affliction of being Ayrshire.

That was an observation by Anton Kreitzer on the kind of magic needed if Yes should be able to win, not something that was likely to happen.

First Gordon Brown saved the World. And then he saved the United Kingdom as well.

This is odd..why does Guardian have 26 regions in, but BBC only 24? It's like they (BBC) stopped updating the site once they called the race.

Well Scotland is a large country area-wise and I guess people who live hours away from Glasgow didn't feel they had anything to gain from being independent.  Glasgow would have liked to become the new London, but I guess the rest of the country thought, if we're going to trade London for Glasgow we should just stick with what we know.  When the Gaelic speaking Outer Hebrides vote for "No", you know the "Yes" campaign did something wrong.

Its interesting that Edinburgh is apparently such a NO stronghold even though if Scotland became independent it would become capital of a full-blown country. Kinda like how Quebec City is more federalist than the rest of francophone Quebec

Lol sure there'll be a lot more of this coming:

"Derek Morison tweets: #indyref I spent 4 hours handing out YES leaflets at 2 Glasgow polling stations... and I find it extremely difficult to believe those figures"

Be wary of making crude demographic assumptions, btw. There were some very working class areas where Yes badly underperformed expectations (i.e. it wasn't just the poor results in rural Scotland). Historically Presbyterian working class areas perhaps? Admittedly you'd need to look at detailed figures that don't exist to be sure. Still, I wonder whether some of the patterns in general were heavily cultural?

A sad night for the potential for a more progressive and independent Scotland. Democracy at work for sure, and I respect it.

A sad night for the potential for a more progressive and independent Scotland.

But a happy night for the potential for a more progressive United Kingdom - Scotland elects virtually no Tories and will be valuable in helping give Cameron the boot next May!

With a boring No vote, what are the chances the UK actually gives Scotland all that has been promised if they voted to stay?

Even Alex Salmond's home electorate in Aberdeenshire voted 'no'...
