This is exciting. It must be strange for our Scottish members that half the forum is more emotionally invested in the outcome than they are, though.

How many Forum posters are actually from Scotland ?

afleitch, bore, ... ?

How can Scotland be taken seriously as a modern European country if it takes seven hours to report results? I mean, really.

Uhh, because Scotland doesn't want to be an international laughing stock like Florida in 2000 ?

And because the ballots are not counted locally, but first are sealed and transported to the local authority offices where they'll be counted (carefully, which means the vote tally and especially the absentee ballots will need to be protocollized and everything).

Better the counting takes longer and is accurate, rather than doing it US-style where there are no clear counting guidelines as to when a ballot is valid/not, ballots added weeks and months after an election and recounts which are disputed ...

A bit disappointed that the results were not closer (I predicted a 50.4% win for NO) and the fact that turnout was lower than in Sweden (84.5% as a percentage of registered voters, 82.1% as a percentage of all eligible voters 16+).

But yeah, the Scottish people made their choice and it's probably the best this way (even though Independence would have been fun to watch).

It looks like my earlier speculation, that old reliable voters (concerned about their pensions and their NHS-services) came out in droves and voted NO, was right.
