On the bright side for Christie, Republicans have a huge victim complex. They feel a kinship with Christie as he's under attack. On top of that, they just like opposing the media consensus. If the mainstream media talks up a candidate, the right immediately gets suspicious. So, Christie's fall from grace has allowed the right to forget their anti-Christie vendetta. Or, at least, Christie is out of the crosshairs of the right wing for the moment.
On the other hand, Christie was involved in the Bridge closing, whether he knew about it or not. We hold politicians responsible for the actions of their administration, particularly actions by high level staff. This is also not the last shoe to drop. There is the other Bridge scandal as well, the one over the alleged securities fraud by the Christie administration and their convoluted plot to divert money to Pulaski skyway repairs. Plus, we know that Christie is a New Jersey politician. If history is any guide, there's some corruption or misconduct out there somewhere. Once you have these multiple investigations snooping around, sometimes they find something, even if it wasn't what they first intended.
