Flashback: Republican Primary

In a surprise decision, Former Governor Ronald Reagan has announced he will not run for president, citing that it is time for a new generation of Republicans, and that he would be proud to help and advise, but that his time is past. In other news, Former CIA Director, Congressman George Bush has announced his run, as well as Senator Bob Dole, Senator Paul Laxalt,  Congressman Phil Crane, and Governor Jim Thompson. This is turning out to be a very intense race with no clear frontrunner.

Iowa Caucuses:

George Bush (R-TX) 30.4%
Bob Dole (R-KS) 29.8%
Paul Laxalt (R-NV) 25.6%
Phil Crane (R-IL) 8.5%
Jim Thompson (R-IL) 5.7%

After the Iowa Caucuses, both Phil Crane and Jim Thompson withdrew from the race, without endorsing any candidate, merely promising to endorse the nominee. After the race was down to just three candidates, both Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford decided that it was time to endorse a candidate. Reagan endorsed Laxalt and Ford endorsed Bush.

New Hampshire Primary:

Paul Laxalt 38.6%
George Bush 37.6%
Bob Dole 23.8%

After New Hampshire, Bob Dole's campaign was running out of steam, with no endorsement from either Ford or Reagan, he was losing momentum fast, and needed a win to remain relevant. It was becoming a battle of Moderate vs. Conservative, and he was caught in the middle ground where there was no winner.

March 4th:

Vermont Primary:
Paul Laxalt 36.3%
George Bush 36.1%
Bob Dole 27.6%

Massachusetts Primary:
George Bush 38.1%
Paul Laxalt 34.8%
Bob Dole 27.1%

With yet more losses for Dole, he put all his efforts into South Carolina, his last chance for a win, if he could win there he might be able to pull off a comeback, but without a win there he would have to withdraw.

South Carolina:

George Bush 33.4%
Paul Laxalt 33.3%
Bob Dole 33.3%

And after the South Carolina primary, Bob Dole withdrew from the race, and endorsed George Bush, causing the Republican primary to be much shorter than anticipated. While Laxalt managed a few more wins, he too endorsed Bush after it was clear he could not win.

Paul Laxalt

1981: The Inauguration of George H.W. Bush

In his inaugural address, President Bush presented a message of hope and economic renewal, and promised never to back down to the Soviet Union, saying that if America was to remain strong, military might was not to be compromised. He also spoke of reducing taxes and overall tax reform to help the middle class. His speech was taken well by most Americans. The forces of change were at work.

Ronald Reagan as Secretary of State? He's certainly got the charisma needed for the job.

Disaster Strikes:

Just 69 days into his presidency, President George H.W. Bush was shot buy John Hinckley Jr. on March 30th, 1981. President Bush was struck directly twice, and indirectly once from a bullet ricocheting off the presidential motorcade. Bush was immediately rushed to the hospital, but it was too late, and he died just a few hours after being shot.

The Unexpected President

After news came of President Bush's death, Vice-President Howard Baker immediately took the oath of office on live television. He then gave a speech in honor of President Bush's accomplishments and his integrity. He used this speech to reassure the American people, and it worked. The country was uncertain of what a Baker presidency would bring, but his handling of the assassination made many Americans sure that he was calm, cool, and collected. In his address to the nation he also announced that he would continue with Bush's plans and his campaign promise to appoint a woman to the supreme court.

Howard Baker, 41st President of the United States

The question now was who would President Baker appoint as his Vice-President. Many names were thrown around, including:
Secretary of State Ronald Reagan (R-CA)
Senator Paul Laxalt (R-NV)
Congressman Phil Crane (R-IL)
Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN)
Secretary of Defense Alexander Haig (R-PA)
Senator Larry Pressler (R-SD)
Senator Lowell Weicker (R-CT)
Senator Bob Dole (R-KS)
Governor Pierre DuPont (R-DE)
Senator Barry Goldwater (R-AZ)
Congressman Barry Goldwater Jr. (R-CA)

Instead of being dogmatic and saying Reagan or Haig, I'd say Goldwater Jr. for his chance to make a dynasty.

Media on the Hunt:

Reporter: Secretary Reagan, many have speculated that President Baker will select you to be his Vice-President, what do have to say about that? If not who is the President thinking about appointing?

Reagan: Well, the speculations aren't too far off, as President Baker offered me the position. I declined though, I believe I serve my country best as Secretary of State. However I have taken up the position of leading the President's search for a Vice-President. There are many qualified candidates, and right now we are vetting several candidates.

Reporter: Any specific names for us?

Reagan (Chuckle) We are still in the process, but I can say that Secretary Haig will be staying where he is, and he is quite happy with that position. Also Lowell Wiecker, and Governor DuPont have declined any interest. I can assure you that we will choose the best person for the job.

The Appointments:

The President finally came before the nation in May to announce his appointment for both the Vice-President, and Supreme Court Justice. With starring approval, the President announced that he would appoint Sandra Day O'Connor to the Supreme Court. This was a very popular move among many Americans, and was unanimously appointed by the senate. His Vice-Presidential nomination was contentious. Not wanting to have any chance of losing the Senate, and wanting to appeal to a younger crowd, and the conservatives in his party, the President announced that he was appointing Congressman Barry Goldwater Jr., son of former Republican presidential nominee,  Senator Barry Goldwater. This led to some democrats in the Senate, led by Ted Kennedy to oppose his appointment. However when Senator Goldwater defended his son in a speech on the floor, calling Kennedy nothing but a troublemaker in already troubled times, Kennedy's approval rating dropped, and more Americans favored the appointment of Goldwater Jr. In the end Goldwater was appointed 85-13, with two abstentions.

Cabinet Shake-Up!

Baker was unpleased with the performance of Alexander Haig, and even went so far that he said, "Haig is undermining my policies at every turn, and has no respect for higher authority." President Baker went to him and demanded that he resign. Haig agreed, but many speculate that this feud will go on, even so far as Haig to run against Baker in the Republican primary. In a swift move, President Baker announced that Former Senator Robert Taft Jr. would replace Haig as Secretary of Defense.

I am not shocked about the replacement of Haig. I know I am going by OTL too much, but he does not seem like a trust-able man.

ECONOMIC RECOVERY ACT OF 1981 PASSES

The President addressing  ERTA before a joint-session of Congress.

After much deliberation on the Republicans part, the Kemp-Roth tax cut passed both houses and was signed into law by President Baker. This is an extreme victory for the Republicans and the President.

Good so far, though it made me flinch when GHWB passed. I'd like to know how he deals with the inflation problem and 1982 recession. Same as IRL?

Really neat stuff so far.  Curious to see where this goes.  Maybe less Moral Majority stuff / the Christian Right have less influence on the GOP?

I've kinda lost interest in this TL, but I will give an ending/where I wanted to go with it.
Baker's term is almost identical to Reagan's ITTL, only taking a few more moderate approaches to foreign policy (*cough*Iran-Contra*cough*). As a result he wins in 1984 against former Vice-President Mondale ala Reagan. In addition, George W. Bush enters politics earlier and becomes a congressman, later winning the Texas governorship. Due to the influence of Goldwater Jr, Ron Paul becomes a senator, defeating Phil Gramm. This is the epilogue:
1988 Junior Year:

Vice-President Barry Goldwater Jr. (R-CA)/SoD. Robert Taft Jr. (R-OH) 451EV
Gov. Jerry Brown (D-CA)/Gov. Michael Dukakis (D-MA) 87EV

1992 Golden Waters Flow:

President Barry Goldwater Jr. (R-CA)/Vice-President Robert Taft Jr. (R-OH) 427EV
Gov. Michael Dukakis (D-MA)/Sen. Dale Bumpers (D-AR) 111EV

1996 Establishment Returns:

Sen. Dan Quayle (R-IN)/Gov. George W. Bush (R-TX) 267EV
Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D-TX)/Gov. Bill Clinton (D-AR) 271EV

2000 Mourning a President:

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)/Gov. Pete Wilson (R-CA) 250EV
President Bill Clinton (D-AR)/Vice-President Bill Bradley (D-NJ) 288EV

2004 Down With War:

Sen. Ron Paul (R-TX)/Gov. Buddy Roemer (I-LA) 414EV
]President Bill Clinton (D-AR)/Vice-President Bill Bradley (D-NJ) 124EV

2008 Goldwater Legacy Continues:

President Ron Paul (R-TX)/Vice- President Buddy Roemer (I-LA) 379EV
Fmr. SoS. John Kerry (D-MA)/Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) 159EV

2012 Independent Rising:

Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA)/Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) 217EV
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)/Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) 193EV
Vice-President Buddy Roemer (I-LA)/Gov. Jesse Ventura (I-MN) 128EV
