Well yeah...

There have nothing I have seen that indicates that the Syrian rebels are liberal or enjoy wider public support in Syria.

While some of them can be called moderate, they're only that because first Nusra and later ISIS was so extremist that it made people who didn't have a problem terrorising non-Sunnis seem moderate. Ironic the rise of ISIS have resulted in even Nusra being seen as moderates.

Of course not all rebels are this bad, some especially the once who hold Aleppo was just opportunistic rural Sunnis, who saw the revolution as a chance to get some plunder, it's interesting to read the reports from Aleppo, where the rebels blame the people of Aleppo for not joining the revolution, while they on the other side describes the rebels as thieves and raiders.

Of course to be fair, there may be some secular supporters for liberal democracy among the rebels, but there are nothing which indicate that they are more common than Chinese natural blondes (which in all fairness do exist).

I'd be careful about using the word 'idiotic'.  remember, they lie to us about both the means and the aims.

No, not arming them when this began was idiotic. Now we have ISIS to deal with as a result. Should have listened to Clinton when we had the chance.

Yes, and the bombing of Syria without the government's explicit permission is a flagrant violation of international law.

Yes, like all of our stunts to arm people that are united with us just because we have a common enemy. This will backfire, just like it did with the "moderate" rebels (ISIS) in 2013.

I think so. I generally have a good deal of trust for the Kurds, but other than them, I'm extremely cautious. These sorts of moves have backfired so many times. ISIS must be stopped and wiped out, but I am not interested at all in funding or supplying their next incarnation.

We really don't have much of choice but at least this is about as good it gets in terms of plans. ISIS is a serious threat, but not an imminent threat. This and that Obama seems pretty non-ideological about the use of force gives reasons for cautious optimism.

Actually, yeah, we kind of do.

The tone of Obama's teleprompter recitations addresses doesn't really change anything about the Syrian rebels

How do you expect doing nothing will turn out?

Who knows, but that doesn't really matter since we're already doing something. We're conducting airstrikes against ISIS and arming Kurdish forces. Not arming Syrian rebels isn't akin to "doing nothing."

Point is, it's not like we "have no choice." That's just not true.

At this point, it's a risk either way. Do you really want anyone in a Syria to win right now?

Yes, anyone apart from  IS actually. Peace is after all better than war for the majority of the population.

How is it risky to not arm Syrian rebels?

Well this poll has one of the largest gaps between Atlas and America that I've ever seen...

Has there been a RL poll done on this issue? This thread isn't about bombing ISIS.

Edit: Just found one. According to that, only 48% of Americans think we should be arming Syrian rebels.

I know one that surely has a bigger gap: "Are you a male or a female?"
