If you were Rand Paul, and you just won the Republican Nomination, who would you choose as your VP and why?

It would have to be someone who hasn't been known as an ultra-hawk on foreign policy, I'd love to see Walter Jones.

Paul would be in an odd position. He needs a Veep who can reassure the establishment and centrists, but doesn't have his primary supporters screaming "Sell out!" He should avoid anyone who disagrees with him on issues where he has the support of the majority of the public (so no Hawks).

A fiscally conservative but sufficiently popular Governor makes sense. It adds a different kind of experience to the ticket, and can represent a model of Republican governance. If Scott Walker gets reelected with a large enough majority, he'd be a potential pick. John Kasich could be an elder statesman type choice. Tim Pawlenty got an A from the Cato Institute, and has blue collar appeal.

I'd vet Luis Fortuņo, former Governor of Puerto Rico. He adds diversity to the ticket, has political talent, and would let Rand Paul add an optimstic goal, turning Puerto Rico into the 51st state.

Tim Scott, John Kasich, or Rob Portman.

John Kasich or Scott Walker could be a good vice president for Paul. I don't see Perry or Santorum being his running mate, and Ayotte and Paul would have to discuss their differences on foreign policy first to form a ticket.

Rand Paul would more than likely want someone like Amash or Massie, but that's highly unlikely. The best pick would be Haley since Gary Johnson was too unintelligent enough to stay in the GOP
Johnson said throughout the campaign that he would run even if Ron Paul was the nominee. Paul did not endorse Johnson at any point. Johnson went to Ron Paul in person to inform him that he was running, and still did even after Paul disclosed that he too would run.

TL;DR: Johnson never had a chance in the GOP. He made a good decision to run for the Libertarian nomination and still managed to poll 1% of the vote in the end. The best option for Paul would be Rob Portman or someone of his standing.

A governor in a competitive state like John Kasich or Scott Walker would be good.

Agreed. I'd also add Cory Gardner to the list of best running mate options for Paul if he can defeat Udall this year. While Gardner wouldn't have much experience in statewide office under his belt, he does seem to be an above-average politician in his own right as far as campaigning goes.

If Cory Gardner wins that Senate race, he will be a top contender for VP, and I think he would be the best choice for Paul.

There are pros and cons to having a ticket with two people elected to Congress in 2010. It could make the ticket look new, but it could also make the ticket look inexperienced and lacking in diversity.

I agree with the Kasich suggestion. He'd be better off with an elder statesman-type choice like that who also can provide some balance as far as some of his views are concerned.

Rand Paul should try to go for a more "establishment" type, and with that in mind, I do believe Huntsman would be a good choice for Paul. A Western governor who has already been vetted. He adds foreign policy expertise that might help with those that would worry that Paul's is too naive, plus they have some overlap on not just foreign policy but in terms of having a more libertarian outlook on social issues and civil liberties. He adds to Paul's message of being a more inclusive GOP and more appealing to the youth vote, which Paul has been trying to target.
