The oldest mention of the name Zurich in its Latin form Turicum dates back to the second century AD; the words STA(TIONIS) TURICEN(SIS) are carved in a Roman gravestone, a copy of which can still be viewed in the old town.

The name can be traced back to the Celtic root *dur- 'water' and may be derived from the personal name Turos.

Brisbane was named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, the Governor of New South Wales. He made the order for the first penal settlement to be made in the Moreton Bay area.

Ottawa seems to come from the Ojibwe word odaawaa, which seems to mean trader(s) but is also the name of a Ojibwe/Algonquin tribe which lives in another part of Ontario, MI and OK. The original name was Bytown, after Colonel John By, a British dude who supervised the building of the Rideau Canal.

Montréal comes from Mont Réal, the Middle French form of 'Mount Royal'.

Saint-Malo (France) is named after Saint Maclou, some random Welsh-born dude who settled where the city is today for a bit of time and is one of the seven founding saints of Breizh.
