...will it be fair to categorize Illinois as the most inelastic Democratic state in the country?

I can't imagine a governor emerging from a scandalized administration to withstand a Republican wave and then governing in a way that is so unpopular and then beating a good-quality, well-campaigned Republican even in California and certainly nowhere else.

Isn't elasticity defined as how much a state actually swings, not who the eventual victors are?

Kirk still won a Senate election, and those are much more partisan than gubernatorial elections, and Republicans have won numerous downballot statewide elections in Illinois. I'd blame Brady and Rauner. Dillard would've crushed Quinn, in 2010 and now.

Rauner is pretty weak compared to Dillard. If the Republicans wanted to win, they'd have chosen Dillard, but whatever.

I don't know many specifics about the candidates, but why would Dillard have been more likely to beat Quinn than Rauner?

Nope, Maryland. At least Rauner has led in some polls.

It's not even like Quinn is charismatic or anything like that. It's really a surprise how "well" he's doing right now.

Nope, Maryland. At least Rauner has led in some polls.
The fact that there was no democratic primary lead to low voter turnout allowed Rauner to hold onto his lead. It should of been Madigan v Dillard matchup. But, now she is free to run against Kirk 16 or Vallas in 18.
