Is a visit to Michael's grandparents on the menu?

More information Smiley

We're flying into New York and staying with friends up in Washington Heights. While Michael is a fast (lead footed) driver we're not sure if we'll rent. He can bomb it down to Florida in 16 hours which we might do, though it does mean loosing a day each way. We'll be dropping by the Poconos to see his family but only for a day or two. It makes sense I think, given that it's November, that we'll stay fairly local.

I'd skip Florida if I were you guys. There's nothing there that's worth that much driving. The Poconos sound nice though.

Come visit us in DC instead! Grin

As a Florida resident, I recommend only the Tallahassee area, and there is not much to do there at all unless a music festival is going on or something Tongue.

Going to the Poconos in November? Well, Pennsylvania welcomes you (in advance) to ice hell. Enjoy.

Seriously though, enjoy your trip Smiley

Eh, I'd add St. Augustine and the Keys as cool sorts of history places.

Eh, I went to St. Augustine last month and it was pretty bad. It's only good if it is your first visit. Otherwise, it is a rather overrated beach town filled with the dirtiest chain restaurants and cruddy hotels I've ever seen.

This was the same trip where we couldn’t get any food because the restaurants closed after a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert nearby and my Uncle drunkenly retold the story of the Donnor Party to a Denny’s hostess in order to get us inside so we could wait two hours for dinner at 11:30 PM.

I'd say St. Augustine for the fort, and that's pretty much it. The biggest things to see outside of Orlando would probably be New Smyrna Beach. Daytona Beach is way overrated.

Pennsylvania, eh?  Aren't you a gay, atheist Scotsman?

Stay away from everything in blue, lest you be cut up into tiny pieces or forcefully baptized in the Susquehanna.

Other than that, enjoy your trip and welcome to the great Northeast!

While I can appreciate the desire to go south during that time of year in that part of the country, I'll still agree with you that that sounds like a waste of time.

(unless your SO is visiting a dying grandpa or sick cousin or something, but if it's just to see the beach or go to Disney, then yeah, a waste of time)

Michaels folks are in Monroe County so it's commutable from NY anyway. If we went to Florida then we would be stopping by St Augustine; he went to Flagler but it's a bit of a trip.

Welcome to the States (whenever you actually arrive, that is). It's too bad you can't see California while you're here.

Welcome. I'd invite you to see New England in the fall, but by November most of the bloom is off the rose (or maple), at least around here.

Close enough to Pittsburgh to outrun the lynch mob, of course!
