You oppose free trade? Why do you approve of the Spanish-American War?

Throwing my two cents in, I support free trade now but likely wouldn't have back then.  As for the OP, definitely a FF!

All around terrible but his actions in the Philippines really stand out as probably the worst he did. HP

Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad.

Also, just a brief comment here but lol at anyone who voted HP for James Polk and FF for McKinley.  Save for Polk's support of slavery and McKinley's lip service for Civil Rights there was very little difference between the two men's quest to fulfill the White Man's Burden (C)

Not defending McKinley or anything (they're both terrible), but Polk's land grab was a lot more consequential than McKinley's.

Just wondering, but what exactly is so different about supporting protectionism now, and supporting it then?

Maybe nothing on a "left-right" scale, but it was a decidedly pro-business policy back then when the US was still a developing/emerging economy and the world economic environment was very different than it is today.  Today, you won't see many business leaders calling for higher tariffs, as they no longer benefit from them.  There's a reason the GOP dropped a protective tariff like a rock mid-20th Century.

Wouldn't have figured you for a pro-imperialist, I thought you were more of a Libertarian.

So they wanted to be under Spanish control forever?  I was not aware of that.  Bad things happen with every war.....we do lots of things we're not supposed to do and hide it.

I'm a free trader too, but maybe his decisions were right for that particular moment in time.  Seems like they were.

It seems as though the U.S. propsered and wasn't in any prolonged conflict during his tenure, so I gave him an FF.....but I'm not a McKinley worshiper.

The Filipinos liberated themselves and declared a republic in 1899, which the US defeated in a war 1899-1902 resulting in up to 220.000 Filipino casualties, then you got guerrilla activities until 1913, so quite a bit of warfare resulting from McKinley's actions.
