My aunt shared this photo on Facebook. Racist and homophobic nonsense are commonplace on this woman's timeline. I hate it. I don't want my mom to invite her to our Thanksgiving dinner next month. Should she?

I wouldn't want to associate myself with someone like that.

I understand where your coming from.  I have a lot of relative's I (and for a matter my dad) can't be around.  They are incredibly racist, and with a half African American sister, it is insulting to hear what they say.

I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of isolation, but I would find every opportunity to mock or humiliate them.

Ugh. I have plenty of racist/homophobic/sexist/xenophobic family members, but my mom will always invite them to family gatherings, so I know "that feel."

Alternatively you could treat her like a human being instead of a political enemy.

Sorry Hagrid but that's family, so:
You may dislike, hate her, she's still your aunt...

So, no.

I just have arguments ... family isn't an excuse for stupidity.

Does she really object to burqas, or is she just gullible? Generally, the latter is more common on social media.

She's not gullible. She's a bigot. I've called her out on it before and she's invoked all sorts of nonsense about the need to defend Christianity and blah, blah, blah.

Alternatively you could treat her like a human being instead of a political enemy.

I think she sacrificed that personal privilege when she decided that I'm not entitled to being treated like a human being myself based on something I can't control.

I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of isolation, but I would find every opportunity to mock or humiliate them.

In fact, I'm thinking of volunteering to say grace, just for her benefit:

Dear God,

On this Thanksgiving, we thank you for our friends and family, and for being able to share this opportunity together to celebrate the things and people we love.

Thank you for the food we are about to eat, and for letting us live in a country where we have this luxury; we know that in too many places around the world, people are hungry. We are also thankful for living in a country where everyone is free to express their religious beliefs, free from discrimination based on age, race, gender, or who we love, and free to pursue our dreams as we see fit. Please help each of us give thanks for these things not just on Thanksgiving, but as often as we can.

In Jesus's name we pray,

Amen.

My husband's Pennsytucky bublef-ck relatives openly called the President a n-igger while visiting here. Relative or not, we said that was not on.

I would.

I'm a highly political individual. It is my field and I care deeply about it.

I also have a few family and friends that are incredibly conservative. Perhaps not to OP's extreme, but to the point that has made me cringe in the past.

I still will engage with them. I understand the arguments that it goes beyond politics, and it does. But a lot of things do that wouldn't make me cut ties with a relative or close friend. It isn't a common topic among us and when it is the amount of absurd statements that they make is still in the small minority. But I like to think my relationship with them can continue even when we have radical disagreements on things.

Does your aunt usually come?  Does she have someone else she has thanksgiving with if not?
We can't pick our families.  It's a pain, but otherwise some people wouldn't have anyone.

You didn't actually say what she's done beyond obnoxious Facebook posts. What exactly has she done to you? If its really, really bad, then by all means don't invite her... but then again, that would have little to do with her obnoxious Facebook posts.

If it wasn't that bad, then just suck it up and put up with her. Most people have to put up with some boorish relative around the holidays (mine's a NWO conspiracy theorist Tongue). Love your enemies, turn the other cheek etc. Just be the better person. Besides confrontations are almost never as satisfying as they are in your head.

Even worse than the political sentiment is the "like and share" virus paradigm of these things. So damn annoying. We played the same stupid game with email years ago and people eventually figured it out. Hopefully, facebook behaviors will adapt too.

Aren't a lot of feminists in favor of the burqa bans though?

Not that your aunt supports them for that reason, but IIRC Tunisia was the first country to ban them, and they did it for women's rights reasons.

Political arguments on Facebook are just about the worst thing on the Internet; even moreso than YouTube comments, because this time it's your own friends and/or family that you're discovering to be moronic assholes.

It's way more satisfying to belittle her beliefs in snide, nonsensical ways. For example, if someone spills some green bean casserole, remark that it was an act of jihad, amiright auntie? When you say grace, begin with "Dear Isa" and when she leaves say "as-salamu alaykum!" Ask her the differences between a burqa, niqab, and hijab. When she inevitably doesn't know, ask why she wants to outlaw things she doesn't understand. Is she scared because she thinks they look like ghost costumes and she's scared of ghosts? Ask her to name six Muslim countries. Ask her if she would be a Muslim were she born there and raised that way. Spit in her drink. Pretend to wipe your nose in her hair. Respond to any of her requests with "Jawohl!"

Or, just completely ignore her.

That photo is hilarious. If only they had been exposed to bin liner during the culturally backward times when they formulated their fashion sense, they may have altered it somewhat.

The BNP is a horrible Nazi party, no doubt; but there's nothing wrong with banning the burka.
