No (I/O)

There's really no evidence to support the idea that these bans are particularly effective, and I personally don't see how texting while driving is anymore dangerous than applying makeup while driving or eating while driving, two things that, as far as I am aware, are not banned in any state. As far as I'm concerned, if you're not crashing into someone else, I don't really care if you're texting as you drive.

Seriously?

It's in black and white. No correlation between smart devices and accidents or accidents/VMT. People don't text and drive, or they mitigate the risk.

Young kids cause horrendous crashes while texting. Though the accidents are not more horrendous or frequent than accidents in previous eras, the olds panick and the insurance companies panic. Law enforcement seizes upon an opportunity to raise ticket revenue.

Just another day in the life.

Why ban what cannot be enforced? That is simply an afront to the rule of law. I say no.

Really, we should just ban texting period...

Seriously, though my vote is no (D), as if you can't enforce a law, why have it on the books?

It's already illegal in all but 6 states, but as others have noted, it's stupid hard to enforce and like a lot of rarely enforced traffic laws it's usually just tact on to a string of them when something horrible happens.

But it should be illegal anyway just to let people know it's wrong to do.

It still has a chilling effect on the behavior.

What's wrong with PSA's? They don't generate revenue?
