Ah, remember the good old days in October 2012? When we suffered so much but eventually everything turned out fine? Those were the days.

But there's little reason to think 2014 could be a repeat of 2012. For one thing, even in the worst days of 2012 we didn't get polls as bad as R+6 or R+8 in States like Iowa and Colorado. And the Romney surge was due to a debate bounce, not a sustained movement.

So, this time, do we have objective reasons to feel doomed? Or do you still hope things will sort themselves out?

I sure feel very uncomfortable these days.

If the polls are still showing leads like that in mid-October, I'll be worried. As of now, there's still time left for improvement.

There were bad polls in 2012 in Colorado and Iowa. Nearly as bad as they are now.

I think Pryor or Begich will win. As for Ia and CO, NC is a purple state and a leading indicator of how those states will play out.

I'm getting used to the idea of the GOP taking the Senate, and the clusterf[Inks] that will accompany it.  But I'm not going to panic over something I have zero control over.

Last week I came to accept the GOP gaining 6-7 seats. So no.

It's going to be very close in the upper chamber, with Iowa and Alaska being the tippers.

I don't know why either side would be "panicking." We've known for a long time that it is plausible that either side could take it. At this point that statement stands true.

It doesn't really matter. Even if the Democrats hold onto the Senate by the skin of their teeth, I think that the judicial filibuster elimination won't have 50 Senators supporting it. The 114th Congress will be awful.

Why would Dems have angst over an event that at the end of the day, will have little public policy meaning?

I don't really care.

Sure it'd be nicer to see Democrats maintain control, but I don't see what difference it makes. Obama can veto whatever comes from the crazies.

If it makes you feel better, a plausible scenario is a 51 R / 49 D Senate. The result of that is basically just gridlock - the Democrats will be able to find at least 2 Republicans to vote with them on anything terribly crazy the House GOP sends over, especially considering how many of them are going to be running for reelection in purple/blue states in 2016.

Guys,

You need all to be positive.

If democrats keep the senate: GREAT Cheesy.

If democrats lose the senate! GREAT Cheesy. Mcconnell would be a disaster and would hurt the  GOP for 2016.

Having a majority in the Senate is only worth so much.  The Republicans aren't going to be able to pass anything because of Obama and the filibuster, so the biggest effect of winning the Senate will be tactical.

It might actually help the Democrats in some ways, because the 2016 Democratic nominee would be able to run against Congress more easily, and everybody hates Congress.

Democrats should start panicking if some of these other seats that previously are uncompetitive start becoming competitive (Like Minnesota or something weird), but seriously, you guys should've seen this coming.

I just love how the vote is so divided that "I am not a democrat" is actually leading even though this site is dominated by democrats.

This. I'll be disappointed if Republicans take the Senate, but at least there will be the silver lining that McConnell and Boehner will no doubt make Hillary's trip to the White House much easier.

No, because there's this thing called 2016, when all of those Tea Party Senators come up for re-election. There's a good chance that Democrats gain as many seats two years from now as Republicans could gain this year.

Now, I'd panic/care if there was a possibility that we could maintain the number of seats in this election that we currently have, because 2016 would then produce the possibility for a filibuster-proof majority, but alas...

Whether Democrats have a majority or not come 2015 in the Senate won't affect legislation or policies that are passed over the next two years, and won't stop Democrats from regaining the Senate come 2017.
