This is not the right way to get them to change their name.

I don't want to ban the word from usage on television, I want to ban it from usage anywhere, in any context.
wow....you can stop changing your politics, you're certainly in the right party now.

It's like calling a team the Chinks or the Spearchuckers. You can rationalize it any way you want, if it's considered by the people it's targeting to be a racial slur, then it's a racial slur. White people don't get to tell minorities what is offensive to them, and they most certainly don't get to say "suck it up" if they find it offensive. It shouldn't even be a matter of one's politics. It's a matter of "how okay with you that people are using a dictionary-defined racial slur to refer to a sports team?"

I don't disagree with any of that....my issue with you wanting to entirely ban a word from use.  THAT's the crazy part, and right inline with Dem thinking.

This isn't a discussion about whether or not the name is racist. Racists still have the right to freedom of speech.

Isn't it the GOP that wants to ban the word "gay" in schools?

I suspect that this will prove like Keystone XL and a number of other things of late, something that for political reasons, the administration would take under advisement until after an election and then finally decide.  In this case, they might go as far as a moderate hero position of not banning the name, but banning the use of the logo in TV generated graphics when reporting scores and the like.

This isn't going to happen through the FCC. This is probably just to put pressure on the NFL to change the name themselves to avoid a stupid precedent.

There was a petition filed with the FCC by a professor, so it's not the FCC proposing this.

I wouldn't know, but probably.  Both sides enjoy calling for the banning of things they don't like.... or at least certain people from both sides.

The FCC shouldn't be regulating content to begin with.

Definitely. But if they do, R******s definitely should be censored.

That would make the news reports on the banning itself somewhat awkward.

Awful. No, I agree that that would not be the way to go about it and that there is clearly a free speech issue. Banning that word in that context is stupid, plain and simple.

Is it a free speech issue that you can't say f*** on tv? I don't think so, so this isn't either?

I don't get this reasoning. That's like saying, blacks face discrimination, so let's discriminate against Asians just to be fair. If you think something is wrong, it makes no sense to expand that thing in the name of fairness/eliminating double standards.

This won't pass constitutional muster, and is a perfect way to allow the team and its supporters to play the victim. Terrible idea on all levels.

"Constitutional Muster" is irrelevant to the Federal Government of 2014. At this point they are basically going to do what they want when it comes to issues like this and you're left to deal with it. Maybe you can waste your time trying to vote them out next time?

This is no more unconstitutional than hard core port being not allowed on network TV.

Sad thing for old boozing TV presenters.
