I'd get off easy because I'm everything the military doesn't want physically, but if I weren't me it'd depend on the war. I'd serve in World War II or Korea, but not Vietnam or Iraq.

There was no moral difference between Korea and Vietnam (unless you are fixated on the UN authorisation). You got a Communist dictator attacking an authoritarian right wing dictatorship allied with the US, red guerillas in the South with widespread popular support assisting the Northern aggressors and a poor peasant population caught in the middle suffering from combat and US airstrikes.
There are more civilian casualties (bombed damns = mass drowning)  and more US atrocities in Korea than in Vietnam, so in that sense it was worse. The main difference is in the media coverage and the attitude on the home front.

It doesnt make sense to OK Korea, but not Nam.

Well, no. It's not being cowardly if it's over a dumb war like Vietnam. Rather, it's being smart.

Ewww TG.  Every person has the right to protect their life in any way possible when a hierarchical machine is attempting to send them against their will into danger for a conflict between governments that they had nothing to do with.

How is not wanting to be forced into fighting a war that doesn't involve the defense of my country make me a coward?

Serve, I was almost a Marine officer by my own accord, but had some health issues at time and wasnt ready for it. However, I serve Uncle Sam in different capacity now.

I like to think the answer is serve (which is what I voted). But it's hard to say for a question like this until you're actually put in that situation.

Intellectually, it would depend on the circumstances, but practically, I would probably serve. Most people follow the path of least resistance, and in this case, it's do what you're told to do.
this....

but probably more realistically, I'd sign up before I got drafted so I could get a better gig and not be a bullet stoppper.

I will be conscripted when I'm 18; though that's just Austria, so basically doing nothing but push-ups and sitting in the military camp; but anyway, I hope I'm deemed not fit enough or whatever for the military, and if yes; I will choose the option of civilian service instead of military service for six months...

Like my Father before me (and both my grandfathers) I would serve. While my Father did not agree with war in Vietnam, he had a low draft number so he enlisted anyway and got a better position. Both my Grandfathers served in WWII. I believe the honorable thing to do is serve, though I may not agree with the war or the draft.

What are those six months really like? What do you spend your time doing? Is their a real chance of being deployed? In my naïveté, I've always assumed that it's more like an extended, more disciplined stay at camp. I can't imagine a modern military training soldiers and putting them into action within so short a period.

I think it's like it was in Germany until it was abolished a few years ago. There's zero chance of being deployed anywhere. It's just basic training. (In other words, a waste of time for almost everyone involved.)

Serve. Citizenship entails certain duties, which I feel should be discharged, no matter how inconvenient or unpleasant. To do otherwise, I view as dishonorable.

As of now, college deferment. In the hypothetical, serve, I guess.

Well I work in disaster management, so the teams I support have prepared me in my career Smiley
Mets, Jets, Knicks, Islanders catastrophic events all.
