Listening to them as I found this thread.

AWESOME FREEDOM BAND!

The 2nd Law is a pretty strange album for them (although "Madness" is beyond incredible), but The Resistance was their best work since Origin Of Symmetry, which is among my absolute favorite albums.  Hypothetically, if were to have never heard Muse and started a band, it would sound a lot like Muse.

I like them, although I wasn't wild about the most recent album. BHAR is great.

Bellamy is quite clearly a nutcase, but he is attractive and writes good stuff occasionally, so all is forgiven.

They're alright, not great. Black Holes and Revelations was their peak, but other than a couple songs from Resistance (not the title track) they haven't done much noteworthy since.

Trash. Queen for a people without a sense of irony.

It's possible to like both.  I see what you mean, but Muse's spacey and prog influences make for an interesting listen.  Queen's better, much better, but Muse is some of the best modern music.  Surely they are better than whatever U2 is doing these days?

Agreed. I dislike Queen too, but at least Freddy Mercury and his boys had humorous moments. HB, obviously.

Not every British band that sells out big arenas is trying to be Queen, guys.  Queen literally hit every genre not called reggae... hell they put out a disco album in 1982 (that everyone forgets because it obviously sucked, but it did have "Under Pressure" tacked on at the end.).  Muse are a spacey, proggy alt rock band that goes for almost the same anti-government and universalist messages that Roger Waters did with Pink Floyd.  Hell, Queen at their heart were a hard rock/metal band (listen to their early output, it's some of the heaviest music ever recorded at the time).  Muse doesn't even approach metal, and nothing they've done is heavy.

Like, seriously, maybe I'm misremembering this but isn't the frontman of Muse a devotee of David Icke and his crazycakes reptilian theory?

Really don't see either one of these comparisons, for better or worse, personally.

He claims to have repudiated his ... beliefs about 9/11 around his Olympics involvement. He is fruitloops though, no doubt.

I'm not sure if the point was merely stylistic, HockeyDude. I mean, Queen and Pink Floyd are both among the main exponents of certain bombastic tendency in rock music, the dinosaur bands which were bashed hard by their critics since the end of 70s (punk, after-punk, new wave). In my (subjective) opinion, Queen can be partially absolved from pomposity because of their sense of humour (sometimes, I've found "Bohemian Rhapsody" enjoyable). As for Pink Floyd, I like the first album, some "Relics" songs and a few from other albums, but I feel unable to enjoy the full listening of "The Wall" or "The Dark Side of the Moon". Among my favourite "prog rock" bands in the 70s is CAN, a German 'commune' of virtuoso performers where instrumental solos were discouraged. I think that pursuing some kind of transcendentalism in rock music is generally a double-edged sword, although I adore some "transcendental" bands and performers. As for modern bands, I like many Radiohead songs (No Surprises, Pyramid Song or There There, to take some examples) , but I feel they are not always spotted on. Still, Radiohead is far better than Muse, IMO. It's all about the subjectivity of tastes, of course.

Bellamy is loony, but a fun and harmless loony because he puts all that energy towards making music.

Their first couple of albums are good listens. Now they're just way too OTT.

What oakvale said was valid. Tongue
