I don't actually talk to people enough, I can tell you that much. But what I can't tell, which is worrisome, is whether my eagerness to talk to people in certain contexts (say, after a class), is out of the desire to have an interesting conversation or is some semi-conscious attempt to convince them that I know a lot.

I say this because I was in a class today (having spoken quite a bit) and the latter idea came to mind, after which I didn't say anything. Afterwards I mentioned to the professor about how the discussion topic had related to the topic of the Ivorian economy (this is a seminar on the state and development, I should add, not entirely random), and since he said he didn't know much about its history I began to explain but kept on cutting myself short as I was not sure whether I was trying to explain the history of the Ivorian economy to him or rather show him how knowledgeable I was about the Ivorian economy.

Later, after a lecture in a class on Ancient Egypt about how, I guess, the Hyksos did not actually exist but were a result of a narrative crafted by Hatshepsut, I wanted to tell someone about how that would explain why Manetho credits the removal of the Hyksos to a Thutmosis, since it was Thutmose III who, as we know, supplanted Hatshepsut in most of the records (who in turn had taken credit for this "expulsion" from an earlier king); and since the idea that it was Thutmose III who erased Hatshepsut's name from history out of spite has been seriously contested, I wanted to say that the main lesson from the lecture was that studying history is pointless because everything we know is wrong, which I suppose is what passes for humor with me these days.

Why did I want to say this, however? Because I found it interesting, or because I wanted to show someone that I knew these things about Hatshepsut and Thutmose III? Things have been going well, but (or quite possibly because) the amount of socialising I do has gone to virtually zero. I suspect I'm now quite desperate to talk other people. That does not answer the question, however.

Either way, I'm sorry for your loss afleitch, and best of luck for your husband. Also congrats to Hagrid for getting into grad school and to SMilo for getting a job at UBS (?).

There's nothing wrong with showing off your knowledge a bit, as long as you don't act as a pretentious jerk in the process. It's all about the tone and attitude you take to discuss these topics.

I'm going to be out of contact for a few days. I'd prefer not to discuss why.

Generally: Medical scare, hospital, et cetera.
Specifically: Really would prefer not to say, but I promise it's nothing life-threatening.

My uncle-in-law passed away Thursday after a brief illness.  We weren't close, but I respect him, both personally, and for what he did, especially at Normandy.  He was a naval signalman with the 6th Naval Beach Battalion and thus part of the initial infantry landings at Omaha. He was one of three men in his communications section to go unscathed that day, and thus it is not surprising that his final wishes called for part of his ashes to be interred with his wife and part to be put in the Atlantic to join those of his comrades who are already there.  The Greatest Generation is passing away and may God grant that we never have occasion to see their equal.

So my T-Shirt design for our GSA group came in 2nd unfortunately out of 4 entrees. It won't be the design for the shirts of the club, but it would have been the state of Ohio on the front in rainbow colors with the group name below it and on the back name/sexual orientation (if preferred).

The design that was voted on is really good to though. And every single one of us voted for it. On the front it will say "2 4 6 8 Lambda (GSA) don't discriminate!" and the back will say the name of the college/year (2015) and a few other things. Font colors will be white shirt/black text, but we plan to tye dye them after they come in. Tongue

In other news, the guy who I like's birthday was today and we spent the afternoon at laser tag/Steak 'n Shake with another 3 friend of ours from GSA. We look like a better and better fit every time we hang out.

Gay-Straight Alliance. As one of the many GSA groups in the region, we make up the Northeast Ohio Alliance of College & University GSAs.

It's our goal to spread awareness for LGBTQA rights on campus and statewide like gender neutral bathrooms and ending discrimination in hiring and housing. We attend conferences (there's an upcoming one we're attending in April down at Ohio University), have special guest speakers, participate in Gay Pride Parades, support pro-equality candidates for office, volunteered for the Gay Games last year, etc.

The best part of it though is all of the awesome friendships and relationships that were formed among us.

Got my first college acceptance (GMU) and feel good about it, as I didn't apply early anywhere.

Still procrastinating on a lot of work that I have to make up...

Allow me to explain the twelve-hour ordeal that I've had to deal with:

3:00 PM: Get out of class, get situated and take a breather.
3:15 PM: Pack.
3:45 PM: Clean my room.
4:00 PM: Take out the trash.
4:30 PM: F**k about my room.
5:00 PM: Wait for the bus.
5:20 PM: Actually get on the bus, which is late by now.
5:50 PM: Get off the bus.
5:55 PM: Get some dinner. Play Pokemon at this nice noodle place. Probably the only awesome thing that happened past 3.
7:10 PM: Leave. Try to call a cab, and realize that it somehow sends me STRAIGHT TO VOICEMAIL. Have to walk down Queen St. to get to the station
7:30 PM: At the station. Have to wait some more.
9:40 PM: Go to board. Oh wait! The f**king train is late! (2 hours of waiting now)
9:55 PM: Go back inside.
10:20 PM: Finally leave Lancaster. F**k about on my laptop.
11:30 PM: Train arrives in Philadelphia. For some god-forsaken reason, Wendy's and Taco Bell of all places are closed. slightly pissed off. (2 hours)
12:05 AM: My train is delayed. A bunch of randos and I are pissed off. We want to die.
12:30 AM: Two of the randos invite me out with them to a bar. I cannot go because of fascist bullsh*t. Thanks, Reagan! It's not like I've literally done nothing for 3 hours!
1:00 AM: The train has not left Washington. At the earliest it will be here at 3:00. We're all pissed. I almost have a breakdown. The 40-year-old woman and I are ranting, one woman is literally crying. I am literally offering my parents to get on the train to NY
1:30 AM: Randos leave. Some random guy wants me to give him money to get home. Full on puppy dog eyes and ish. We are at Hour 4.
2:00 AM: Meet up with a guy who apparently was on the train I took coming in and is going to Boston. Train has apparently not even left DC and is at least an hour away.
2:45 AM (Hour Five): The train has left DC. I repeat, the train has left DC. Bad news: Two hours is now.
3:00 AM: More talking, more schmoozing with random people. Hop back on my laptop.
3:30 AM (Hour Six): It says my train is boarding. SPOILERS: It's not. I'm mad as hell.
4:00 AM: We're finally boarding. I sigh a sigh of relief, other people I talked with sigh a sigh of relief.
4:20 AM: I am on board. I sit here and I type my experience with you.

EDIT: Two train stops.

Total waiting time: 8 hours.
Delay time: 6 hours.
Total actual travel time: 7 hours.
Amtrak: not even once.

That was a very refreshing break. Life is way more interesting when you're not on here all the time.

The only thing that happened to my account while I was gone was a fascinating message from this individual who, six months after I replied to the topic, needed to tell me about how he used to have "very feminine eyelashes."

This. Place.

Allow me to explain the twelve-hour ordeal that I've had to deal with:

So speaking of train troubles, I went down to Philly for the weekend (said weekend also being my...ulp... 30th birthday, dear God what am I doing with my life I make Bushie look like a responsible and productive member of society), taking NJT/SEPTA instead of the usual BoltBus... and we sat in Penn Station for a half hour because they had to single-track under the Hudson.

Oh, by the way, that single tracking is gonna become way more common in the future given that those tunnels are a century old and got a bunch of Sandy damage we haven't had time to repair because trains are literally running under them as often as possible much of the day.

If only there was another tunnel that we could build, planned out and ready to go with federal help, to forestall the coming transitpocalypse.

Oh, if only. Too bad that never happened!  Ugh, don't get me started.  Because I will get on yet another (totally predictable rant) about our the f**kheads in Drumthwacket and Albany, and the sickening insistence that transit riders can get endless fare hikes and a crumbling system, whereas drivers can always get more and more lanes without ever having to pay a sensible level of gas tax... this whole system is just so horrifically f**ked.

Well, guess you got the Cliffs Notes of a rant anyway.  Happy March, everyone!

While flying to Savannah, I dropped my phone on the floor of the aisle as the drink cart was rolling forward. It rolled over it and cracked it badly, and now it won't turn on so I guess I need a new phone :/
