Hat tip to user "Possible Liberal" on Daily Kos for providing and summarizing this data

Here's a map of SSM support by state, based on recent polling by YouGov:

Some takeaways:

-Support for Gay Marriage is highest among the northeastern states.
-Opposition is highest in the deep south and Utah.
-Support is lowest in Alabama, while highest in Massachusetts
-Opposition is surprisingly low in Kansas (thanks, Brownback)
-Overall, 48% of country supports, while 39% opposes.

lol at Brownback turning Kansas into a liberal hippy paradise. Maybe if he's re-elected Hillary will be able to carry it in 2016.

Interesting map.

Iowa's a little greener than I would have expected, but they've had a few years of legal SSM to figure out that the sky didn't fall and that the institution of the family didn't crumble.

All those neat little river cities in Iowa are far more progressive than you'd think.

Interesting that Louisiana is more supportive than Texas.  Wouldn't have expected that.  Also, support in NM is surprisingly high to me.

That's true, they are progressive.

Also interesting that North Dakota is right at the national average.

That's a whole lotta I-dont-give-a-crap-ism.  Same with Montana and South Dakota.   I doubt 99% of the people in those states could even think of a gay they know.  Gays tend to gravitate towards places where there are things to do.

Democrat?  As in they support fiscally liberal and populist policies?  Sure.  Progressive in the snobby way that some on this forum flaunt themselves as progressives?  I don't think so.

Brownback probably went too far even by Kansas standards and splintered the Kansas GOP. Moderate Republicans from the GOP may be developing an ad hoc alliance with Democrats before taking over the Democratic Party.

Thanks for your expertise on Iowa. It is appreciated.

From my personal experience, Eastern Iowa, Northwest Illinois, and Southwest Wisconsin actually is quite progressive on social issues in a very LaFollette tradition. It is traced back to the Scandanavian settlement and communitarian and social justice values that came with it.

Anywho, not so proud of Illinois in this. We should be more progressive on this issue as a whole than both Wisconsin and Iowa.

Can a mod merge this thread into the stickied gay marriage support thread? There's no need for a separate thread.

I compared the margin of support/opposition for gay marriage in each state (according to this poll) to Obama's 2012 margin of victory in each state, as a rough proxy for whether a hypothetical candidate would gain or lose votes by supporting or opposing SSM. To put it a different way, the greener the state, the more (relatively) gay-friendly its Republican voters, the redder, the more (relatively) homophobic its Democratic voters. Some interesting results.

And the map of the original YouGov data with undecideds removed. I do find it hard to believe that there's majority support for SSM in Kansas but not Missouri.
