I don't have a problem with what they did, but I think Franco was the (barely) lesser of two great evils.

Yeah, I never really understand when people paint both sides of the Spanish Civil War as equally bad. Sure, no one is saying the Republicans were perfect, but for all their crimes they were undoubtedly better than the Nationalists.

It's a reaction to the long established tendency to ignore the fact that the Republicans committed atrocities as well. I would agree that it's often taken too far, but some sort of narrative counterbalance was clearly necessary...

I don't think that's the only reason... the tropes that the Republicans were basically Stalin's patsy's and that the government was filled with communists are widely believed outside of Spain still.

Yes, that's true as well. Admittedly I was mostly thinking of how the war tends to be remembered in Britain (viz. heroic - if misguided - youth go to Spain to fight manfully against fascists, tragically lose). Imagine it's quite different in Ireland. Tongue

Ummm... It's not really remembered at all here. I was thinking of how I've seen remembered in various conversations I've had, including many on the internet (probably this was my mistake).

Well they were Americans so they were more upstanding than any other actors, and had absolutely no connection to Comintern whatsoever. Tongue

Some were FFs for sure.   I don't find anything about the Spanish Civil War lends itself to generalizations.

I don't think that's the only reason... the tropes that the Republicans were basically Stalin's patsy's and that the government was filled with communists are widely believed outside of Spain still.

Sadly, that's one of the main reasons why many people is still painting both sides as equally bad... if not falling in the absurdity of portraying Franco as the "lesser evil", that is to say, the man who saved Spain from the clutches of Comintern. That is exactly the myopic and full of prejudices vision of the Spanish conflict held by Neville Chamberlain, arguably one of the most damaging men for the Republican cause. Subsequently, certain narrative, conveyed by Franco's apologists and folowed by foreign conservative historians (as well as some anarchists or left-wingers like Bolloten), spread a mythology characterised in portraying the Republican government as a Stalin puppet. Some 'respectable' historians like Beevor still hold that Juan Negrín wanted to establish a popular democracy avant la lettre. It sounds strange, given  that the man who was PM between 1937 and 1939 was a moderate socialdemocrat highly influenced by the SPD (he went to Germany to study Medicine when he was aged 15) and documents released from PCE and Comintern archives prove that he often ignored advices from his communist counselors.

I think it's in the same fashion that some people, after learning a little bit of dirt on the Allies of WWII or the Civil War Unionists, immediately shout "this means all sides are equally bad!". It's Second option bias at its most repugnant.
