As someone from Kentucky I'm constantly acting too much like a northerner for the people down here.

Why was Indiana included and not Illinois?  Southern Illinois, especially south of the St.Louis metro area, is as southern as Kentucky.  Silly accents (though dying) and everything.

This, though Florida is now somewhat iffy.

To be fair, while neither is Southern, Indiana could be more culturally Southern than Illinois since so much of Illinois's population is clustered in the Chicago area.

Yes, that was my thought. The southern parts of both states are often considered Southern, but Illinois is so dominated by Chicagoland, that it would be pointless to include it in the poll.

I was hoping someone would try to answer the above. What does Southern culture actually mean today?

This, plus a lot of VA is not Southern in any respect.  Also, as noted, some of FL.  Some of it is raw southern.

A lot of southern states have chunks that aren't southern...not sure why Florida and Virginia always get singled out.  Austin's not southern, neither is Atlanta or the Research Triangle (Raleigh/Durham).

Southern Indiana is no more dense than southern Illinois (at least AFAIK).  Most people in Indiana are (ironically) clustered around Chicago or the state capital, so that argument doesn't really hold water.

This question is hard to answer because in North Carolina it depends on where you are.

I voted AOTA, because there are definitely a lot of Southern qualities about Indiana. My grandmother lives there with her boyfriend (weird saying that...) and literally all they do is camp and hunt, which I consider pretty Southern. They're apparently not alone, either. They frequently tell stories about how many people they see on their camping and hunting sites.

(I'm not making fun but....)

You can be a hunter and camper and NOT be southern.  Ask every other person in Canada.

I know, but maybe I should've explained that they're all hillbillies. Like real hillbillies, duck dynasty style.

I don't associate hunting and camping with Southern culture. That's Western to me. Southern recreation in my mind is sitting on the porch drinking cool beverages.

Certainly some southerners hunt, but I'd agree with you that it's more of a midwestern/western thing.  Hunting is very big around here (dear, turkey, pheasant) and it was kind of big in suburban St.Louis where I grew up (mostly just dear).  Dear in the south tend to be smaller 'cause of the heat.

...and every kind of person goes camping.

Here in South Dakota, I was in a minority at my school for not hunting (even in Sioux Falls), and the state is definitely NOT Southern.

Also, Pennsylvania has one of the largest hunting populations of any state.
