Yes, but it's effectively only good for Canada.

Yes, I have 3 (NZ, USA, Italy).  I currently rely on the NZ passport to remain in Australia. Tongue

Not sure if this is true of other nations as well, but American citizens cannot own a passport. It says very plainly and in bold This passport is the property of the United States government. Upon demand made by an authorized representative of the United States Government, it must be surrendered.

A German passport is the same.

Yes (not American).

But it's not valid anymore (it ran out sometime last year).

I will probably get a new one at some point (when I go abroad again). I usually never take my passport with me when I drive via the "German corner" (Deutsches Eck) to Salzburg (even though it would be good if I do, in case I get into a police control).

The price is 76€ (ca. 100$) and it's valid for 10 years.

I just read that a US passport costs 110$ + 25$ execution fee.

It also takes 4-6 weeks (!!!) to get it, using the standard procedure.

Here, the fee is already included in the 100$ and it takes a week or so to get it (my mum waited 4-5 days last year).

Just looked up that you can get a passport here within 1 day, but you have to pay 220€ (280$).

As is very fitting for the United States, one may pay an additional fee for faster service. When I was in college, I decided fairly spontaneously to visit a friend who was studying abroad in the UK. I think it was about an extra $50 to get it in just a week or two. Now that the Schengen Agreement has been in place for a while, I wonder if those living on the continent are any less likely to get a passport. Perhaps if the UK and Ireland were willing to join. When I was in UK, we decided to go to Germany for the weekend, and (not being all that informed on European affairs) I remember being surprised that I had to use my passport again.

Schengen is only an agreement so that you are not stopped at the border.

That means you still need a passport everytime you move between a country within the Schengen area, for identity checks by the police.

For example I sometimes drive from Zell am See to Salzburg via Lofer, then passing a bit through Germany along the so-called "Small German Corner", then entering Austria again.

Of course there are no border controls anymore, but technically you would still have to carry either a passport or an ID card with you (Germany mandates that you carry an official ID with you all the time).

I usually drive via Germany without my passport with me, so I have no clue what the police would do if they stop me and ask me for my ID ... Tongue

Yes, 2 of them (Canadian and French), although only the former is still valid since I have no need for the other one right now.
