Let's see if Islamophobia is prevalent on the Atlas Forum.

Inspired by the atheist thread.

My answer:
I wouldn't mind, as long as this person was a westernized Muslim who was not a fundie (not a Muslim)

No, so long as they don't use their religion to govern, and as you stated, not a fundamentalist.

I would care as much as if any christian was running.  Which is not really at all unless they are a fundamentalist social con.

That's an incredibly pointless caveat, since we all know such a person wouldn't even make it into the line of succession to be POTUS, let alone get elected to the office in their own right.

It really depends on who they are as a person. If it's Keith Ellison then probably not.

So long as they are pro-Zionist, no, it wouldn't bother me.

Good luck trying to find a pro-Zionist Muslim... There aren't many around.

No not really, just as a theorectical Muslim PM of Denmark would not bother me, not because I don't dislike Islam, but simply for such a person to be elected in a western country, he would need to be westernised both in outlook and in how he interpreted his religion.

Would a staunch pro-life Christian fundamentalist bother you?

Yes, and since Islam is an insular religion known for its lack of cultural moderation and its opposition to separation of church and state, a Muslim president would bother me.

So what about someone like Keith Ellison?

Jokes aside, I am one hundred percent convinced that Obama will announce he is agnostic after the Presidency. I don't think there is anything wrong with that, nor do I have any real proof, but I just have a gut feeling that he is secretly agnostic (as some of our past Presidents have been, of course).

Anyone I vote for must demonstrate reason above dogma (to an exponential factor that satisfies me), unless I'm voting for the lesser evil of two dogmatic platforms. At this particular moment in world affairs, I find it nearly impossible to make a Muslim the commander-in-chief and the sole executor of US foreign policy. I'd be equally skeptical of a Christian fundamentalist or Zionist.

For instance, George W Bush was raised Episcopalian, which is a sort of olive branch denomination between Catholics and Protestants. Therefore, I was willing to accept his version of unitary monotheism as genuine.

I would have to know a lot more about Ellison before I ever cast a vote on his behalf or welcomed him as president.

Would a conservative version of Ellison satisfy you? He is a moderate Sunni, and he is very socially liberal.

Culturally Muslim? Wouldn't really care. Fundamentalist Muslim? I'd care very much. They're much more dangerous and regressive than fundamentalist Christians.
