In October, it's definitely a Freedom State for not having a holiday celebrating one of the most brutal mass murderers of all time.

I think the only reason South Dakota doesn't celebrate Columbus Day is that they have zero Italian-Americans and a decent Native American population.  Most people in South Dakota doesn't exactly love Native Americans.  Sioux people are seen as the primary poor, uneducated non-white minority of the state who are generally shiftless, lazy, drunk, violent, etc.

That's not to say South Dakota is some horrible, racist place.  It's nicer than one would expect, especially the Black Hills and Sioux Falls.  I just wouldn't point to South Dakota as the paragon of caring about Native Americans.

It's not perfect.  The situation of the Native Americans is unfortunate, and some Republican state officials have worked to suppress their mostly Democratic vote.

Having said that, we do not have the virulent racism against Native Americans that is remotely similar to the anti-black racism of the South.  The situation on the reservations is shameful, but the federal government shares much of the responsibility for that.  Native Americans throughout the country have been persecuted, but the fact that South Dakota is so far the only state that has replaced Columbus Day with Native American Day alone is a sign that we can do the right thing. Also, our own Tim Johnson is one of the greatest Native American friends ever to have served in the Senate.

I prefer North Dakota, due to its history as possibly the most lefty state in the union.

We don't disagree.  South Dakotans are lovely people in general, but there is racial tension under the surface like there is almost anywhere in America.  South Dakota basically contains a third world country for Native Americans, for sure.  You can't lay that at the feet of contemporary racism, but it does influence how people see Native Americans.

North Dakota is Minnesotas red headed step brother.  We get protective of ND in MN when people criticize it.  The same can not be said for South Dakota.

Suck it CALIFORNIA?!? YOU SUCK!

I'm sorry but there's no way you can tell me North or South Dakota are lefty states if they haven't voted for a single Democrat since Johnson, and he was the exception to a huge flood of anti-New Dealism with the last one being FDR against Landon.

And sans the Dixiecrats, the Democrats have pretty much been the party of the left since the Populist split of 1892.

Also my town doesn't celebrate Columbus Day at all!

Why do people blame Columbus for everything? Columbus was a brutal dictator in the manner that he governed his colony, instituted the first slavery in the New World, and even once had a woman paraded naked and then had her tongue cut off for dissent, among other things. But is he responsible for the entire genocide of the Native peoples? Is he to blame for the spread of diseases that wiped out so many a culture? Surely that would have occurred no matter who arrived in the New World.

But yes, Columbus Day in particular should be wiped away. I don’t see why it should be replaced with an alternative holiday, but we certainly shouldn’t celebrate it. If Italian-Americans wanted a holiday, I’m sure we can find another. Al Capone day anyone?

Not entirely true. The Black Hills reach a maximum elevation that is higher than anywhere in the eastern part of the United States. The Badlands are pretty great too.

ND was the start of the Non Partisan League, which is pretty much the closest thing America has had to a mass appeal anti-elite agrarian socialist movement.

It survives in the repealed death penalty (California still has one), the nationalised bank and grain elevator, the ban on corporate farming etc.

Sorry, I just have a lot of love for the state of North Dakota. I still love California! (Well, more NorCal that SoCal; I don't think humans should live in deserts, it's against nature)

Take it from someone who actually lived there, it sounds a lot better on paper with your descriptions then it ends up being. Tongue The sheer isolation and emptiness is a much bigger issue than you think. Driving from Fargo to Bismarck in the dead of winter and arriving after midnight makes it feel like Bismarck might as well be some sort of colony a different planet considering how barren it before it, I know that actually sounds cool, but then try LIVING there instead of just visiting...

That's because western Minnesota is basically an extension of eastern North Dakota (not the other way around, because eastern North Dakota is far more urban and populated than western Minnesota). Meanwhile the Sioux Falls sphere of influence might extend to Minnesota, but in only a few rural counties really no on cares about outside of those counties.

Blaming Columbus for the killing of natives of the Americas is like blaming Dr. Antoine Louis for all those that died by the guillotine. #idiotic
