To neutralize the "bomb" of potential leaks he's carrying. I doubt he'd take any plea deal that contains jail time, though.

More important, if he tries to leave Russia, the KGB will disappear him and make sure they get those secrets out of him. Honestly, leaving him unmolested in Russia may be the safest thing for everyone involved.

Why is Snowden's testimony needed? And why a plea bargain? The heads of the NSA and CIA have publicly admitted lying to Congress. Throwing them in jail should be a slam dunk, without any testimony from Snowden.

Thats true, and I respect Chelsea Manning more than I do Snowden for taking the punishment. But I don't see anything wrong with Snowden having some fun in the meantime .
