FF

Pros: Passed EC, actions helped pass 13th amendment, ending divisive political fights of 1830s 40s and 50s over expansion. Slavery needed to be abolished, the war was inevitable. Took both moral and constitutional stand against slavery. (on a personal note, I sympathize with him for his terrible childhood)

Cons: Blatantly violated constitution, suspended habeas corpus, imprisoned political enemies without trial, economic issues (tariffs, national bank), unions troops destruction of private property.

None of these are bad things, given that he was fighting against people who owned other people.

muh private property

I wonder if he's mad about the Tories' lands being taken over by American patriots during the American Revolution, too? Or about them being harassed and attacked by the American patriots for being disgusting, royalist scum?

I think the unseemly truth is that presidents who spend their whole terms bound to the constitution, forever looking over their shoulder to satisfy the perceived visions of the Founding Fathers, are pretty much universally considered mediocre at best.

The few "limited government" Presidents who are hailed, are only so loved because they were also massive hypocrites who didn't bother obeying their own rhetoric. (e.g. Jefferson)

Lincoln understood that to make an omelette you need to break some eggs, rather than his feckless predecessors who were content to hide from the slavery issue under the security blanket of the constitution.

It's too bad the HP voters didn't have the guts to explain themselves.

No, I'm not talking about harm to plantations. 75% of the white south was non slave-owning. Much of them hard-working yeoman. And why would I be "mad" about this?

Cons: Blatantly violated constitution, suspended habeas corpus, imprisoned political enemies without trial, economic issues (tariffs, national bank), unions troops destruction of private property.

Dare I say anything bad about Lincoln? Violating the constitution is OK as long as its against terrorists and disgusting people? Ironically you're sounding like a modern Republican. But you know loads more than I do, so feel free to correct my position.

Not at all my complete opinions, but I love this post from the Libertarian Presidential rankings to respond to all those that have him top 5. Most of its comical, but some is relevant. Still a FF

If I could roll my eyes any more emphatically they would fall out. Half of the stuff on that list was just stupid. "Enacting the blockade", "murdered 350,000 Americans", "prevent freedom to secede"?

I mean Jesus Christ just when you thought internet Libertarians couldn't be any more silly.

FF. He was not part of the radical emancipation crowd, until he thought it might serve a strategic purpose. He was comfortable with Grant's war-of-attrition, which wasted lives and prolonged the war. He drafted people into service, but allowed the wealthy to buy their way out.

He is one of the greatest by virtue of his accomplishments and his sacrifice, but he was not appreciably more virtuous or clairvoyant than other top presidents. Just an FF.

Ultimately an FF, but he's certainly not all he's cracked up to be, and he certainly didn't emancipate the slaves as a matter of conscience.

obvious HP for infringing on the private property rights and states rights of the South

use of force is only justifiable to enforce contracts and defend property. the South understood this and were justified in their actions, but lincoln violated this sacred principle of the free market with his war of aggression

also he was pen pals with Marx

The only people who ever say that last load of crap are our token board communists who believe that the original GOP was this true leftist movement.
