I think that's a pretty silly way to look at these issues.

Sure, you shouldn't judge "black people" based on the actions of a few criminals.  I agree with that.  Cory's point is basically racist drivel, and that's why Bill Cosby's words became problematic in America.  We tend to turn everything into a white vs. black issue unfortunately.

But, that's not what Bill Cosby actually meant.  I think his point is that even if there are racial inequities, black people ought to work on the social problems, mostly born out of poverty, on an individual level.  If you just constantly see yourself as a victim with no agency, that's actually racist in my eyes because it's disempowering to black people.  Individual people can make a huge difference in things like the achievement gap, by talking to their young children and reading to them for example.  That's not to say, black parents have the same advantages as white parents on average.  But, I think the point is just that constantly focusing on racism and the victim status of black becomes counter-productive after a point.

No it isn't.

I just meant you shouldn't imply that people can judge "black people" based on the Rodney King riots.  And, making statements about black culture in these broad strokes is just dicey in general.

On why it is so hard to aknowledge that people like Cosby ad Woody Allen might be sex offenders:

That's pretty messed up to conflate convicted child rapist Jerry Sandusky with Woody Allen and Bill Cosby who have never been charged with any type of sexual assault or misconduct.  It's unfair, even if we have an inkling that these guys are gross creeps, to assume that every allegation about them is true.

You get what you give. A point that isn't supported in any way can be responded to with a similar point.

Obvious horrible person assuming the  allegations are true, and it is tough not to believe them when so many women are coming forward with similar accusations.

The results of this poll show why we have so few women on this site.

Brilliant entertainer, but his views on race are, alas, sorely lacking. (And no, I don't give a damn about him being black. Racist crap is racist crap regardless of whether the person saying it is white as the driven snow or black as the darkest night).

Why is he racist? Because he dares to question the false narrative that black people are the targets of some conspiracy by White America to keep them down?

Cosby's not so much a racist, as an elitist. But, his obvious downfall is that he's a rapist. Anyone not voting HP is basically condoning rape.

The results of this poll are disgusting.

Almost as disgusting as this audience in Florida for his show tonight: http://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/celebrity/bill-cosby-gets-standing-ovation-florida-theater-n253996

I'll reserve my judgment. As much as I would like to believe the allegations are not true, it would appear that's not the case.

However, the belief that Black people are caught in some kind of snare designed by "AmeriKKKa" for the purpose of keeping them disenfranchised is utter nonsense and should be written off as such.

Yes, yes, we know you don't believe in the ridiculous strawman you've concocted to stand in for the very real systemic racism that exists in this country.

Hypocritical awful HP. I know Americans have lingering sentimentality attatched to the guy, but that's hardly an excuse - I liked Rolf Harris once before he was revealed to be a creep. I like Lostprophets until I found out the singer was one of the most vile people ever.

I think part of the problem is education. We teach kids they should be mindful of creeps abducting them on the street (rightly) and to refuse sweeties from dishevelled old men in trenchcoats. We then simultaneously tell them if this should happen to tell authorities. The message is clear in lessons: you can always trust the teacher, the priest, the policeman, the trusted adult - the people, in other words, far more likely to be a sexual abuser than Mr. Creepy under the railway bridge.

Anyway the sheer volume and diversity of institutions afflicted with covering up the sexual abuse of their members (including but not limited to the BBC, the Youtube community, the Socialist Workers Party, the Liberal Democrats, MI5, Rotherham Council, various NHS trusts; to name just some British examples) proves that sexual abuse of the vulnerable requires an urgent investigation.  It's best to get everything out in the open air, rather than throwing out a few hysterical Icke-worthy comments from the press while letting villains get away scot-free.

This is maybe the worst atlas thread ever. A majority of Atlasians are evil rape condoners and should be instabanned.

Well, as far as I know, you might be a sex offender.  What of it?

As far as Bill Cosby goes, I hate this whole thing where we put people on trial in the court of public opinion.  Being accused of something is tantamount to being guilty I guess.  I understand the logic of where there's smoke, there's fire.  But, with a celebrity with millions of dollars there's also the logic of cashing in with lawsuits and hush money.

Maybe Bill Cosby is a creep like Bill Clinton is a creep.  Maybe he's a horrible rapist who happens to have used his fame and money to cover up his tracks.  Maybe he's innocent, I don't know.  This is not some cut and dry issue where we know the facts.

I guess what I don't understand is why the media and a certain segment of the population needs to transform into an army of self-righteous yentas whenever a controversy like this comes up.  If you're convinced someone is a rapist, report it to the police.  But, I just don't think it's my job to revile Bill Cosby to prove how feminist and anti-rape I am.
