Its unfortunate Democrats couldn't get a higher profile candidate to run here. Trott will easily be the worst member of the MI delegation when he's elected.
Of the 206 seats like MI 11 with a Cook PVI of R+4 or greater, how many do you think are in Democrat hands?
The answer is six. Any Democrat has an uphill fight in this cycle, especially in an R+4 district. I don't think it matters who they nominated. Trott (who won't be the worst rep in MI by any means) would likely beat just about any Democrat in this district and in this election cycle.
Oh, it certainly would have been a difficult trek, I'm not disputing that. Trott, however, is a particularly weak candidate, and with the Bentivolio variable factored in - well, stranger things have happened.
Despite their borderline views, characters like Amash and Benishek at least have some semblance of convictions. Trott was only ran by the MI GOP because of his ability to self-finance and placate the Chamber of Commerce. I guess it did speak to the confidence of the GOP to win this race when they decided on a foreclosure kingpin as their candidate in this district.
