Hopefully in 2160 a world-acclaimed movie will be made about President Obama's glorious struggle to bring health insurance to the people. The material's definitely there.

That one is probably going to be made sometime in the 2020s though.

Nah, it would bear a too partisan connotation if made so early. But give it 3 or 4 decades, and Obamacare will be widely acclaimed as one of America's greatest successes.

Very good movie focusing on a relatively underappreciated element of Lincoln's career. I wish it had been more epic in scale however, considering it came from Spielberg.

@National Progressive: And who says all Spielberg does is epic? Hast thou forgotten AI: Artificial Intelligence and the most decidely un-epic Chris Rock android or disorganization in general it was. Part Kubrick love-letter, part wtfery?

Point is Spielberg can and does mess-up.

I find this to be the case with some bits of the movie. Lewis and Field were excellent, but everything else played out like a bloated 50's-60's drama film good and bad.

@Antonio: No kidding, I mean where the hell is the movie for Johnson trying to get the Civil Rights Act of 1964 even though it's been 50 years? Where is it? If that's not happening, it'd be silly to ask for an ACA movie.

Disgusting, slanderous film against our nation's greatest president.  They did everything they could to make him look like a crook.

Oldies believes slavery was ended by everyone going to church and having a nice orderly talk with cookies and milk while complaining about those kids 150 years in the future and their rap music.

No; I'm upset they made it look like he used corrupt backroom deals to get it done.  As far as I know, he wanted it to be a bipartisan measure from the beginning, but only a handful of Democrats supported it.  (Thankfully, it was enough to pass the amendment.)

Seward: "Will you run the war from Washington?"
Grant: "No, Bill Sherman warned me about it. Its like Sodom and Gomorrah, I run the war from the West"

From the 1988 Lincoln movie, but an apt description of Washington in the period. Congress was a cesspool of corruption at the time.

Most good things had some backroom baggage somewhere, but historians are too proud to tell it.

Here's hoping someone will one day do a "Lincoln" on the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Except he did use corrupt backroom deals (among other things) to get it done.

I had the opposite reaction - they seemed a little too smug about the backroom deals. Like 'har, har, har, we're showing you how it's really done.' The audience is supposed to both approve and feel intelligent. I'd rather just read Master of the Senate again.

Loved the movie!
Spielberg is the best, and he directed a film of our best president.  Smiley
