There is scrutiny as to whether the reporting system may be overcautious and include many non-violent individuals but this may be one of the cases of "better safe than sorry" etc.

Only 34k? A lot more New Yorkers than that ought to be there. In any case, the entire process is backwards. Anybody desiring to own a firearm ought to be required to undergo a thorough mental health screening first. It's just as self evident as the eye exam one must take in order to get a driver license.

If we would just enforce the spirit of Gun Control 1968, we wouldn't be having most of the problems with mass shootings we have today. All of the other stuff about Assault Weapons Bans and universal background checks is just noise.

they make it quite an annoying process in NY.  my friend tried to get a handgun license in college, it takes a year if it goes well.
