Violence in sports becomes a quasi-major issue (a la v-chips and school uniforms in the nineties), he takes an inopportune position on it, and he keeps doubling down until it becomes a big deal.

Caught roundly insulting political opponents not realizing that her mic was on. (The fact that she'd almost certainly be justified in her insults wouldn't save her.)
