Basically, when Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997, one of the conditions given to HKers by Beijing was there would be the right to vote and universal suffrage in Hong Kong by 2017. The central government in Beijing approved a plan a few months ago that candidates for HK Chief Executive need to be screened and approved by the CCP before appearing on the ballot in 2017.

Now a lot of young people are mad and are sitting in and disrupting the central business district of HK until the Chinese government gives into their demands. The current Chief Executive has repeatedly appealed to the protesters to stop disrupting the city but things are getting ugly again.
