In response to Mordecai's "Worst 3", I thought it prudent to also find the best since WWII.

These three Democrats are well looked upon generally speaking, they have minor scratches though and were slightly status-quo-ish,which makes it interesting.

FDR is practically an icon, and LBJ,Carter and Obama were already in another poll for understandable reasons.

Personally I like JFK the most, Truman like many say of Carter was more of just an amazing guy in over his head. His decisions were excellent, but he just wasn't that effective at the time. Narrowly he has to take second, very very narrowly.

And Bill Clinton was a super drinker of the deregulation juice/ not a New Dealer...so forget him. Also "welfare reform"? Great leading, but he was damage control at best, an inverted Eisenhower. And he didn't have much integrity to him.

That kinda gives it to JFK, he honestly did try to reign in the CIA after the mistake with the Bay of Pigs, he did end up starting up the groundwork for the Civil Rights Act of '64...no denying he should've been better about it and LBJ was the true master of that, but still. He did a helluva lot in just a little over 1000 days.

Ugh. Truman, I guess, though that's more for not being the other two.

I'll just rank them all:
JFK > Clinton > Carter > Obama > LBJ > Truman

Clinton didn't use nuclear weapons or nearly wipe out all human life in a game of nuclear chicken with the USSR, so I guess I'd have to say him, although he's also obviously horrible, given his foreign and domestic policy agenda.

This. JFK didn't live long enough and Clinton was arguably dealt the best hand out of all three.

Easy Truman vote.

I'm not a huge fan of the guy but he at least had balls.  JFK's entire political career was about becoming President and Clinton's agenda was Bill Clinton.  Truman was a rather disliked son of a bitch while in office and it didn't seem to bother him that much.  I guess I kind of have an odd respect for that.

Korea was pretty awful though.

What were we supposed to do, just let the Soviets incorporate all of Korea into their proxy sphere? Stare down the possibility of a Finlandized Japan? Unacceptable.

Korea could have been won without the mass killings of civilians resulting from bombing dams in North Korea and the extreme brutality against communities housing/supporting leftist guerrillas in South Korea committed by the Syngman Rhee regime - which the US could have influenced to some degree if not stopped all together. It is often forgotten that Korea was much worse regarding both civilian casualties and atrocities against the civilian population than Vietnam.

Well, Truman was a racist cockpunt, so that really only leaves JFK in the running.

JFK was probably the best in terms of his platform, but the man was a wreck behind the scenes.

As Mechaman said, I like Truman simply because he didn't care about popularity, just what he thought was right. Firing that lunatic MacArthur and desegregating the military and civil service were ballsy moves that went against the grain of public opinion, buy he did carried them out anyway. The Marshall Plan was also immensely successful. Shame about the atomic bombs (they was more of a dickwaving move to the Soviets beyond anything), but if I'm honest they were hardly the worst of the war crimes done by the Allies in Japan.
