What is your opinion of Australian mining magnate Lang Hancock? His political ideas sounds awful, so HP.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lang_Hancock

Some standard "least government is the best government" stuff, but also:

Supported Westen Australian secession.

Wanted the Australian government to ban foreign support to subversive environmental organizations, such as Friends of the Earth!

Supported ultrareactionary and corrupt Queensland Premier Johannes "Sir Joh" Bjelke-Petersen.

"Nothing should be sacred from mining whether it's your ground, my ground, the blackfellow’s ground or anybody else’s. So the question of Aboriginal land rights and things of this nature shouldn't exist."

So no real respect for private property if it didn't benefit himself and no respect for aborigines.

Even in favour of forced sterilization of aborigines!

"In a 1984 television interview Hancock suggested forcing unemployed indigenous Australians − specifically "the ones that are no good to themselves and who can't accept things, the half-castes" − to collect their welfare cheques from a central location: "And when they had gravitated there, I would dope the water up so that they were sterile and would breed themselves out in the future, and that would solve the problem."

Like his small-government views and his support of states' rights, but not a fan of his views on Aboriginals or his support of Bjelke-Petersen. HP.

HP. Also loses points for his daughter.

Edit: Also lol at the idea that finding resources in the ground in any way makes you an entrepreneur or great businessman. He's a horrible man who basically was at the right place at the right time. F-ck him and his daughter.

Natural resources ideally shouldn't belong in private hands, they should be owned by and for the people.

Also, an awful, awful man; with no discernible skills or utilitarian use to wider society. But capitalism dictates that this waste becomes a millionaire, while the workers who create his wealth are forced to depend upon his whims.

(Related, did Bjelke-Petersen want to destroy the Great Barrier Reef to make way for a shipping lane, or is that hyperbole?)

FF (like Bjelke-Petersen). In order to make such a discovery and then turn it into such a money-spinner, you need at least some degree of knowledge about minerals and business acumen, as well as a dash of fortitude. I certainly wouldn't have been able to do that and I'm sure many others wouldn't. But yeah, big FF.
